Nick Remington and Dawid Kropiwnicki recently shared insights with Data Centre Review on using waste heat in data centres to improve power usage effectiveness (PUE). Their study highlights how repurposing waste heat for local district heating networks can help meet European Energy Efficiency Directive PUE targets, achieving more sustainable infrastructure solutions. Nice one Nick Remington!
Even if it’s a well known subject It’s good to point out this subject to be used in DC when possible (next to a district heating network) Bravo Dawid
Thanks Dawid and Nick for these valuable insights 👍🏻
Nice one mate Dawid Kropiwnicki 👍
This article is incredibly insightful!

2moGreat article, one point that stood out to me is the suggestion that PUE doesn’t account for waste heat. While that’s true in the strictest sense, exporting waste heat inherently lowers chiller energy consumption, which does indirectly reflect in PUE as reduced facility energy, if modelled in the PUE calculation which admittedly quite tricky to forecast/estimate. the industry already has a dedicated metric, energy reuse effectiveness, designed to capture the value of reused energy like exported waste heat. DCs need to promote ERE alongside PUE to give a more holistic view of sustainability and energy efficiency in data centers.
