Those smiles can only mean one thing... it's Draft Day! Today I got to join our NGSA Summer Interns in Round Rock, TX as they learned who's team they would be joining for the remainder of the summer. The excitement, community, and eagerness to get started was undeniable--I can't wait to see the incredible things you accomplish alongside each other. For those of you completing summer internships, here are four tips I'd like to share with you: 1. Lean into your experience. Raise your hand in the classroom, ask the 'silly' question, and volunteer for the project. Maximize every day and you'll walk away knowing that you got the most out of your summer internship. 2. Build a network. There are many tenured and passionate industry professionals who have waited months to invest in you--seek out their mentorship and form connections. 3. Look at failure as another piece of the puzzle. As uncomfortable as it may seem, trust that every obstacle and setback leads you one step closer to success. 4. Explore the city you're in! Whether you're close to home or visiting somewhere new for the first time, be intentional in immersing yourself. I played hooky and got caught... Matt's day off. During my last semester in business school, I snagged what felt like a game-changing internship. It was an exhilarating time. Grace Hensley had graduated the semester before and moved home to NJ. She flew to SC to visit me for the weekend. When Monday rolled around and it was time for her to fly home, I was a love-sick puppy. I have never called out sick in my career, but the one time I played hooky... karma caught up with me. I went to work and put on an Academy Award-winning performance. I was so convincing that the president of the company, concerned for my health, suggested I take the day to recover—after all, no one wants to catch a cold. Later, at the airport with Gracie, I turned around at the ticket counter—only to come face-to-face with the last person I expected to see: the president of my company. He was on his way out for a business trip. I didn't have the same luck as Ferris Bueller. The lesson was clear and costly: honesty is always the best policy. Had I approached the situation differently, who knows? Maybe I would have secured the position. But life has a way of steering us where we're meant to be. Thanks to fate and a bit of persistence, I eventually found an opportunity that was an even better fit.
