I would like to start by saying a big thank you to the amazing Amanda Nthati Chembezi (She/Her), Ssanyu Sematimba, and team for the invitation to the 'AL for the Arts and Creative Arts Department Webinar: Artists as Creative Entrepreneurs by Adama Ka'.
Luke Agada, Adama Ka, your presentation was without reproach. Thanks for sharing crucial insights into the art world; the art industry and the art market, how these structures align and interact; the valuable recommendations on what's important and where to put our focus as African creatives.
As a young creative myself, I can relate and corroborate the facts you all have shared through the meeting. Adama Ka, thanks for speaking on the reality of crafting meaningful and genuine creations, the dream of expressing freedom and self through our creations - be it through performance, painting, and/or exhibitions of all sorts - "it all depends on how we see ourselves; what we consider as success; free thinking; a free spirit; self assurance; embracing the things that make us different, and the list goes on".
Today I have learned about the nuances that surround the Global art market, especially where the African continent stands on this global stage. Adama explained that, the African continent is a start-up in this context - African creatives are still being marginalised, and being stereotyped in various ways - which empedes global visibility, breakthrough, access to resources and funding, and so much more.
On a flip side, it is refreshing to see "how supportive the African Diaspora has been and continues to be; challenging stereotypes and the status quo way of things by embracing a new way of thinking and doing in regards to art making". Luke Agada shared various ways for us creatives to thrive and prosper in these non-traditional markets: "knowing one's values, vision, and purpose" Luke says. Luke went on to elaborate on the significance of seeking mentorship; maintaining one's curiosity; building a network/support system; and most importantly HAVING A MENTALITY OF SUCCESS".
Those are the key things that stood out to me. Thank you once more to everyone who was present and for your contributions to this discussion.
Love, Mél.
