On the 5th of September, CSES team members Luca Marcolin and Laura Granito presented to the Committee on Budgetary Control the findings from the recently concluded study: "The EU anti-fraud architecture – the role of EU-level players, how they cooperate and the challenges they face." This study, commissioned by the European Parliament's Committee on Budgetary Control, presents an overview of the current anti-fraud architecture of the European Union, describing the current composition, roles and responsibilities of the organisations involved, as well as their governance structures and forms of cooperation and coordination. On this basis, the study examines the functioning and identifies potential risks and challenges related to the design and functioning of the architecture which can suggest further actions to improve its effectiveness and efficiency. It places a particular focus on the existing and possible future role of the European Parliament in this context. #antifraudarchitecture #EuropeanParliament

Why Can't Architects Advertise Their Services? Did you know that according to the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) Professional Code of Conduct (2009), Article 3.3.5 states that "Members shall not advertise except as described and permitted in the practice guidance notes." Considering this era, should we ask "how can architects advertise themselves without advertising themselves?". Video: Interactive session with Arc. Professor Illya Azaroff, FAIA, Department of Architectural Technology, served as co-author of and contributor to the just published The American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York State Disaster Assistance Guide. The guide equips architects across the state with the tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to support disaster response and recovery. “The initiative is a testament to what can be accomplished when we bring diverse voices together to address complex challenges. This guide is a milestone not just for architects, but for communities across New York State,” said Azaroff. Read more 👉https://lnkd.in/eNxeZTZN #citytechfaculty #citytechnews

He’s a visionary man. I already like his persona. As an architect, I find myself increasingly disheartened by the persistent misconception that our role is limited to mere design development, while engineers have come to dominate the real estate industry, owning projects and relegating us to the sidelines. The constant refrain, "let engineers be engineers and architects be architects," is nothing more than a ploy to keep us docile, restricted, and confined to the narrow confines of design. We have been reduced to glorified drafters, our expertise and vision undervalued and underutilized. The self-defeating mindset that has taken hold within our profession is truly disheartening. We are not just designers; we are visionaries, problem-solvers, and project managers, with a deep understanding of construction processes, materials, and techniques. Yet, time and time again, we find ourselves sidelined, our rightful place as the general supervisors (among many others) of building projects usurped by the rising tide of engineer-led ventures. The disheartening reality is that the real estate industry has become a battleground, where engineers have managed to assert their dominance, while we, as architects, have been left to watch from the sidelines. The age-old adage, "might makes right," seems to have taken hold, and we find ourselves powerless to challenge the status quo. I can't help but wonder, where did we go wrong? How did we allow ourselves to be reduced to mere drafters, our vision and expertise relegated to the background? How do we sell ourselves with this self-imposed limitation, or reclaim our rightful place as the general supervisors of building projects among our many other skills set But the path forward is not an easy one. We must overcome the entrenched biases and the deeply ingrained perceptions that have kept us in the shadows. We must venture beyond the confines of the design studio and immerse ourselves in the dynamic world of site management and development, where our skills can be truly showcased and appreciated. Like that we can easily network, easily sell and make meaningful contacts. It is a disheartening reality, but one that we must face head-on. The future of our profession, and the future of the built environment, depends on our ability to reclaim our rightful place as the driving force behind the construction industry. It is a battle we cannot afford to lose for the sake of the profession and build environment at large.

I’m glad to announce that months ago, I participated in the UIA 2030 Award. Organized biennially in six categories and aligned with the World Urban Forum, this prestigious award invited architects from around the world to submit their projects. These projects were evaluated for their design quality and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I submitted in *Category 6: Promotion, Restoration, and Sustainable Use of Ecosystems*. Weeks ago, I felt quite desperate not making it to the finalists, but I’m honored to have made it to the pre-finalists. At this young age, reaching such an international competition and raising the name of my country high is a significant achievement. I received an email with this honorable comment: --- "Dear Aya Ezzelarab, Thank you for your interest in the 2024 edition of the UIA 2030 Award, organized by the International Union of Architects (UIA) in collaboration with UN-Habitat. Having now concluded the first stage evaluation, we regret to inform your project has not been selected to proceed to the finalists stage. This year’s award attracted over 100 high quality entries from around the 5 regions of the UIA. The finalists will now go forward to the second stage, and the winners will be announced at the UN-Habitat World Urban Forum (WUF12) next November in Cairo, Egypt. We hope that you will continue to participate in UIA-endorsed prizes and competitions." --- The competition was assessed regionally, representing the five UIA regions: Western Europe, Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East, The Americas, Asia and Oceania, and Africa. The selected entries highlight the power of design to address complex social, economic, and environmental challenges and showcase progress towards achieving the SDGs across six categories. On a side note, the competition involved several stages: project submission, assessment for being a pre-finalist, assessment as finalists, and winners announcement. #UIA2030 #SustainableDevelopment #Architecture #YoungArchitects #InternationalCompetition #DesignForGood
The UIA, in partnership with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), has announced the finalists for the first stage of the second edition of the UIA 2030 Award. The Award recognises the work of architects who contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda. Supreme Court takes a Sledgehammer to Constitutional Architecture Part II: Hammering at the Parliamentary Foundation The recent Power decision of the Supreme Court not only collapsed the separation of powers but also suggests that the courts can review parliamentary proceedings for bad faith legislating, thus upsetting parliamentary independence and privilege.
