In 2024, their importance becomes even more pronounced as society continues to recognise and celebrate diversity, inclusivity, and the unique perspectives that Black creatives bring to the table. First and foremost, Black creatives contribute to the enrichment of art and entertainment. Through their talents in music, film, literature, visual arts, and more, they offer fresh narratives and representations that challenge stereotypes and provide a more accurate reflection of the diverse world we live in. Their work not only entertains but also educates, enlightens, and inspires audiences of all backgrounds. Moreover, Black creatives are instrumental in promoting social change and addressing important issues. They use their platforms to raise awareness about racial inequality, systemic injustices, and other pressing matters that affect marginalized communities. By amplifying their voices and experiences, Black creatives foster dialogue, empathy, and understanding, ultimately contributing to a more equitable society. Biases and assumptions persist, creating disadvantages for marginalized groups in creative fields. These stories share the experiences of a Black designer uplifting representation and a female founder establishing her leadership in a male-dominated industry. “Being a Black gay guy, it’s important for me to work with topics I care about. Society’s expectations often lead me to be chosen for projects based on my identity rather than just my talent. Though I have male privilege, being Black means I still lack the same rights and freedom some people have. So it's important to keep diversifying creative fields. When marginalized creators open doors for others, it matters immensely. If not us, who else will? It makes the hard work meaningful, doing art that I consume while uplifting my community.” —Leandro Assis, lettering artist and art director. “Early on, Hey was mistakenly seen as having multiple partners, since I introduced my whole team, which at the time included two men. So, people thought we were co-run, rather than realizing I was the solo founder. In one interview, a journalist referred to my “partners” coming to an event. When I corrected her and said that I don’t have partners, her demeanor totally changed when she realized her mistake. Once we have widespread accessibility, it'll be easier for DeafBlind people to share our stories and also participate in conversations. I love learning from lives different from mine and in order for me to do that, I need transcripts. I look forward to reading all your transcripts. Recently, I was invited as a guest on a podcast regarding my recent post about AAVE. The interviewer who is from Australia was kind and genuinely wanted to learn more about it. I made it clear to him that I am not an expert on the topic, but I am Black, from Brooklyn, NY, and b/c I am a part of the Black community, I know when folks are jacking our style. I found myself teaching him modern AAVE. To be candid, I usually don’t like teaching white folks Black stuff if it's not business related. Mostly b/c I believe sometimes we should gatekeep. But I also believe when ppl want to learn, to be better, why not extend the knowledge? Which leads me to this point… White professionals -- Black people in your workplace are not required to teach you about anything Black related, but we are more than happy to when it comes from a genuine place, like the interviewer I mentioned. We also don’t mind providing resources for you to educate yourself. We just can't do the work for you. Additionally, when a client is trying to market to a Black or Brown audience, take the back seat and provide the space for a Black or Brown team member to lead. If your team member is telling you an idea is not going to work for a Black or Brown audience, you probably should listen. If it pertains to Black women, direct it to a Black woman. If it’s Black/Brown queer related, do the same. I think this should go without saying, but your ads and media content sometimes says otherwise. To my Black & Brown folks, a lot of us are afraid to say these things on this platform. Don’t worry, I’m not. I don’t speak for all of us. But I speak. For too long we’ve been silenced at our workplaces, afraid of what comes next. Trust me, a good amount of folks have ghosted me since I've been more vocal on here. Maybe they view me as potentially problematic (see my previous post about that). That makes me speak up even more. Plus, I'm really a nice guy. Ask anyone 😊 Brands / Agencies, this new year, make it the year you show up boldly and unapologetically inclusive. Be the example, be the standard. Happy Holidays friends.
