As a Black woman cinematographer, it feels like a slap in the face to attend events curated for Black women in Creative/Media Roles and not see Black women behind the camera. It has become a norm and a huge issue for myself, other women, and non-binary creatives to see the lack of representation at events for us. Before you comment, "It's who you know," "It's the references," or "It's the agencies we hire.”, do know that the excuses are unacceptable. With the number of different agencies and communities centered on getting women, specifically Black women with cameras, hired, it seems that these brands only think we are good enough to market to but not hire. What is the reason? Is it all a facade? How do you claim you are "For the culture and community," but your hiring seems to tell a different story? Let's talk about it. Also, let me shout out a few of my favorite organizations and production houses that have a goal of placing BIPOC women and non-binary creatives in these roles and can be a great resource on this journey. If anything America and the World needs now, it is healing • Usually healing begins with an acknowledgement and apology of a action that has negatively impacted a person or group of people. • But how can a community truly heal in absence of changed behavior, attitude, or policies? • Healing through language doesn't always necessitate an apology. Instead, it embraces the strength of acknowledgment, understanding, and EMPATHY. It's about creating spaces where voices are heard and validated without the weight of unnecessary remorse. • Moreover, it entails using words that acknowledge pain, validate struggles, and offer genuine EMPATHY. It's about creating a safe environment where individuals feel heard, seen, and understood without the burden of expecting an apology for their feelings or experiences. • And sometimes saying, “I Apologize, please forgive me” can go a long way. •

I enjoyed writing this article, exploring and interconnecting the importance of the arts and policy. "The arts contribute more to communities than public displays for residents to admire. Art and policy intertwine past the artistic realm and can be an investment into a community’s economic, social and educational vitality. I am often asked what is art for or what is the role of the artist? I think this quote from one of the greatest thinkers and writers of the 20thC, James Baldwin, sums up perfectly what it means to be an artist and their duty to society: ''The artist is distinguished from all other responsible actors in society — the politicians, legislators, educators, and scientists — by the fact that he is his own test tube, his own laboratory, working according to very rigorous rules, however unstated these may be, and cannot allow any consideration to supersede his responsibility to reveal all that he can possibly discover concerning the mystery of the human being. Society must accept some things as real; but he must always know that visibile reality hides a deeper one, and that all our action and achievement rest on things unseen. A society must assume that it is stable, but the artist must know, and he must let us know, that there is nothing stable under heaven. One cannot possibly build a school, teach a child, or drive a car without taking some things for granted. The artist cannot and must not take anything for granted, but must drive to the heart of every answer and expose the question the answer hides.'' As the 50th anniversary of so many landmark events is upon us, historians, culture critics, and musicologists want to know — what was unique to the 70s? What was the confluence of events that led to music being politicized, to women joining hands to fight for their rights? My upcoming book, Outside Voices: A Memoir of the Berkeley Revolution, examines these events, detailing how women, disabled, and Black communities rose up, learned to use the media and demanded change.
