Approximately a quarter of the global population is estimated to suffer from anemia, with rates increasing particularly among women, pregnant women, young girls, and children under the age of 5. Anemia ranks as the third-leading cause of years lived with disability (YLDs) worldwide. The causes of anemia are varied, and timely detection is crucial for effective treatment and prognosis. Krystal Anderson, a former Kansas City Chiefs cheerleader and an engineer who holds a patent for software that assesses risk of postpartum hemorrhage, tragically died last week after giving birth to a stillborn child. Because Krystal was herself a champion for maternal health, her death is a terrible reminder that the US is experiencing a maternal health crisis, particularly among Black women. Truveta Research has found that Black women experience up to 3.5x the risk of heart failure during or after giving birth compared to white women, and that preeclampsia is a significant risk factor for future cardiovascular disease, with Black women at greater risk than white women. Did you know that endometriosis affects approximately 1 in 10 individuals of reproductive age? In the UK alone, it’s estimated that 1.5 million people are living with this condition, yet it often remains underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, leading to years of suffering and uncertainty. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other pelvic organs. This can result in excruciating pain, heavy periods, infertility, fatigue, and other debilitating symptoms. Despite its prevalence and impact on individuals’ lives, endometriosis research and awareness efforts are still underfunded and insufficient. Many individuals struggle to access timely diagnosis and effective treatment options. This Endometriosis Awareness Month, let’s come together to change that narrative. By raising awareness, sharing personal stories, and advocating for better healthcare policies and funding, we can make a real difference in the lives of those affected by endometriosis. Let’s ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, receives the support and care they deserve. Together, we can empower endometriosis warriors to seek help, find relief, and live their lives to the fullest. #EndometriosisAwareness #SupportEndoWarriors 🎗️💪
