Epic project and very challenging. Deeply stratified and complex industrial archaeology, often fragmented remains of multiple phases of development. Some stand out discoveries of national importance. Fantastic interdisciplinary team working together to deliver something that is frankly brilliant, an example of the conservation and repurposing of one of our most important industrial heritage sites. Thrilled to have played a small part in this project Black Mountains Archaeology Ltd

"This is the most challenging site I’ve ever worked on in my 17-year engineering career.” says Matthew Ace, our Regional Director for Wales. Listed structures. Contamination. Archaeological surprises. The unique industrial history of Hafod Morfa copperworks (once the largest of its kind in the world) meant transforming this site into a contemporary facility was a challenge like no other for the project team. Formerly a thriving hub of copper production, this 12.5-acre site closed its doors in the 1980s, sitting unsafe and derelict for decades. But a council-led initiative found an opportunity to breathe new life into this corner of Swansea. After years of hard work, it is now home to Penderyn Distillery, whose new whisky distillery, barrel store and visitor centre is set to attract 50,000 visitors a year. It's also acting as something of a catalyst to attract new business, leisure and tourism to the area. Through this project, the team have demonstrated that a successful, modern destination can be created on a complex, listed site - all while retaining much of its proud industrial heritage. Huge thanks to: City & County of Swansea Swansea University GWP Architecture John Weaver Contractors LTD TC Consult Ltd and the whole project team! I visited the Penderyn site last weekend, absolutely an awesome transformation! And the whisky isn't too bad either!
