Introduction to the Tile Council of North America (TCNA) Handbook and an overview of the important considerations when selecting tile installation methods and materials. 2. An overview of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards referenced in the TCNA Handbook Selecting applicable TCNA detail for your project. 3. Discussion of the typical elements found in a TCNA detail The 2018 TCNA Handbook contains environmental classifications which indicate the conditions in which the installation is generally expected to perform for commercial and residential. Are British standards failing the construction and property industry? Here are 4 major areas I think are of concern. 1 Cost. they are extremely expensive to buy (£96 - £350 each) making it impossible for people in small firms do broad range research. This keeps them in the preserve of academia, larger firms and legal firms. 2. Too academic, not practical and impenetrable. Some details are vague yet definitions obscure and incomprehensible. Some test methods and assessment models are not fit for purpose on site or in the commercial world. 3. Poor cross referencing. Some ingnor the findings of previous documents some change so often its hard to assess anything against the standard. Some refer to test methods not mentioned anywhere else. 4. Created by committee or boards rather than practitioners. Are we are getting into a situation where general building principles do not appear to be engraved in the industry which leads people to have to quote BS because they dont know how to apply practice? or is it because some systems have become so complex its impossible to apply and co ordinate. How many times have you read " to BS xxx or similar" . look how BS failed in Grenfell; unable to publish what "fire resistent" means and devising tests to approve systems that no one can afford to build. is what we have now a situation where design and liability are just a set of academic references from a world that appears to have limited practical experience?
