We are looking forward to our discussion with Dr. Jeffrey O.G. Ogbar as we discuss his latest book, America’s Black Capital: How African American Remade Atlanta in the shadow of the confederacy. Atlanta is home to some of America’s most prominent Black politicians, artists, businesses, and HBCUs. Yet, in 1861, Atlanta was a final contender to be the capital of the Confederacy. Sixty years later, long after the Civil War, it was the Ku Klux Klan’s sacred “Imperial City.” America’s Black Capital chronicles how a center of Black excellence emerged amid virulent expressions of white nationalism, as African Americans pushed back against Confederate ideology to create an extraordinary locus of achievement. What drove them, historian Jeffrey O. G. Ogbar shows, was the belief that Black uplift would be best advanced by forging Black institutions. America’s Black Capital is an inspiring story of Black achievement against all odds, with effects that reached far beyond Georgia, shaping the nation’s popular culture, public policy and politics.

Black Excellence is a multifaceted concept that resonates deeply within the Black community. Let’s explore its dimensions: Hard Work, At its core, Black Excellence celebrates diligence, resilience, and determination. It acknowledges the countless hours of effort, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment that Black individuals invest in their pursuits. From education to entrepreneurship, from the arts to sports, hard work is the foundation upon which Black Excellence is built. Juju and Corruption , While Black Excellence is primarily associated with hard work, it’s essential to recognize that there are diverse perspectives within the Black community. Some may attribute success to spiritual practices (such as “juju”), cultural heritage, or divine intervention. However, it’s crucial to avoid generalizations. Not all successful Black individuals attribute their achievements to mystical forces. Corruption, unfortunately, exists in every community, but it should not overshadow the broader narrative of Black Excellence. In summary, Black Excellence encompasses hard work, ancestral resilience, representation, and the celebration of achievements. It’s a powerful affirmation of Black identity and a testament to the strength of a community that continues to rise above adversity.

Our abilities and tenacity continue to be disavowed and poorly duplicated. From huge corporations to everyday microaggressions, Black Americans have to constantly remind white people that without us, there would be no them. Embracing this perspective fosters a more inclusive and accurate understanding of the nation's past, present, and future. By incorporating Black history into the broader narrative, we promote unity, diversity, and a collective appreciation for the resilience and triumphs of the Black community. 🖤Join us in celebrating Black History Month at the office! 🖤 Let's honor and recognize the countless contributions made by Black Americans throughout history. The history and experiences of Black people are an integral part of America's heritage and have shaped both our past and present. The criminal justice system has long been intertwined with the oppression of black people, from slavery to the mass incarceration we see today. As public defenders, we recognize the responsibility we hold in fighting for justice and equality for all. Black Americans face disparate treatment at every stage of the criminal process, from traffic stops to sentencing. We must remember that the U.S. Constitution, when written, excluded people of color, and racial discrimination was enforced by the courts. It is crucial for public defenders to understand this history of struggle to effectively advocate against injustice. Throughout history, people of all backgrounds have joined together to fight against injustice, and we must continue this legacy. Black history matters every day, not just in February. Together, we can work towards a more just and equal society.

Despite differing governance models, the historical context and social influence are highly relevant to the Caribbean and Bahamian reality. Led by Torin Darling Brazzle, CEO/Founder of IGNITE! Central : The purpose of the "Winning with Purpose" Series is to reclaim and redefine the Black narrative, challenging harmful stereotypes perpetuated by entertainment, social media, and other forms of media. Currently, many inner-city youth and communities believe that pathways to wealth are limited to entertainment, athletics, or illicit activities, with violence being glorified and a lack of values, respect, and education. "Winning with Purpose" will counter these damaging perceptions by showcasing amazing Black Leaders who personify TRUE Black Excellence.

Each year an American president endorses a specific theme for Black History Month. In 2023, the theme is Black Resistance, which recognizes "historic and ongoing oppression, in all forms, especially the racial terrorism of lynching, racial pogroms, and police killings," according to The Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Previous Black History Month themes include Black Health and Wellness, African Americans and the Vote, The Crisis in Black Education, and The Black Family: Representation, Identity and Diversity.
