In an age of sound-bites, people are bragging about “investing” the time to watch full length movies. We now live in a world where #reading #books — if you have an effective process for reading, synthesizing, & applying the right books — is a COLOSSAL edge. A lot of people pretend to #read, but almost no one devotes the time to build a broad & nuanced knowledge base. Reading just one useful book per week will yield giant dividends over time. Moreover, the returns from thoughtful reading compound over time.

How to skyrocket your creativity in minutes: Start using a commonplace book. The best creative minds in the world like Da Vinci and Einstein all used commonplace books to note down ideas when they learned new things or gained random insights. These could come from conversations, movies, books, experiences- everything. It doesn't have to be a physical notebook. I use my notes page on my iPhone. Some people use Notion or other similar software. Either way, find one place to collect all your inspiration and then let your ideas cook.

I just listened to this fantastic book (iWoz), which is an autobiography by Steve Wozniak and Gina Smith. I'm not quite sure why it took me so long, since it was published in late 2006. I've been using Apple computers since the Apple II in the late 1970s (that was thanks to a friendly family in my neighborhood who had multiple computers). My family's first computer was the original Macintosh 128k, which I first saw and tried out in person at a Sears store sometime in the winter of 1984. Since then, I've been using Macs on a consistent basis in my roles over the years as a photographer, magazine editor, consultant and inventor. This was my review of the book on Audible: "I absolutely loved this book! I appreciate all of the minute details related to many of the amazing computer advancements Woz helped to bring into this world. And toward the end, I felt as though Woz was speaking directly to me, since he specifically gives advice for independent inventors. I am even more energized about my future now thanks to the messages in this book." One of the advantages of waiting to review this book is to marvel at the fact that I'm typing this on an M1 Macbook Pro with an external keyboard, and the computer is completely silent! In fact, even when video editing and exporting/rendering files, I've never heard the fans. 💻 That is no small feat, and I believe it shows that problems like computer noise (and many of the challenges that Woz encountered) can be solved if attention is paid by people who are dedicated to issues like those. And Woz's almost non-stop emphasis on enjoying life, including doing some hilarious pranks, also adds to the book's charm.
