…interesting article and toolkit on the need to update existing government institutions and design new ones to adequately address the growing challenges of today and the future. Some approaches of current public institutions are out-of-sync with rapid change, they are too hierarchical and slow, in other cases some new problems are not addressed by the existing administrative structure. It is important to recognise when existing institutions cannot be adapted or strengthened, but need to be complemented by new ones. Gaps in existing services can be filled creatively, for example by creating institutions with a degree of independence from bureaucracy, but which are still accountable. Not everything can be outsourced,… public institutions are needed to solve some common problems. The proposed toolkit provides a framework for thinking about the design of new organisations. #cities #city #urban #urbandevelopment #sustainabledevelopment

I love cities. My favourite are coastal cities which, like all good things, come with fragilities: extreme weather impacts, risks of food and energy insecurity, safety challenges. So it was a pleasure to reflect on the role of data and technology tools in helping to address key challenges that urban populations face for the World Economic Forum with StateUp research lead Chloe Chadwick. Not technology as a panacea, but as part of the way forward. Many city governments face gaps in implementing tech to improve urban resilience effectively. City governments struggle with barriers such as risk-averse cultures, organizational silos and limited collaboration between digital and resilience teams. Drawing on our long-run observations as well as survey data and research with Visa Visa Government Solutions, Resilient Cities Network, we ask, how can city governments ensure they are well equipped to tackle uncertainties, alongside the private sectors and local people? https://lnkd.in/ehvEa_aQ

Spent the last few days in San Diego with colleagues from downtowns across the West Coast sharing ideas, experiences and learning from the best. A few key takeaways: * The work of BIDs has never been more necessary. * Our cities face similar challenges and opportunities, but what sets us apart is bold vision with action. * Build on change. We must always strive to continue to improve. #DowntownsShapeCities #WCUDF #DowntownSpokane #BuildingBetter

"KPMG paper, the Future of Cities and Urban Economic Growth, is published in collaboration with the World Governments Summit. It aims to provide practical advice for city leaders, administrators, and stakeholders engaged in citizen-centric urban planning geared towards sustainability, resilience, safety, inclusivity, and cultural vibrancy. It was inspired by questions arising from discussions carried out at the KPMG Centre of Excellence for Infrastructure and Cities (Toronto)and builds on previous reports: KPMG-World Governments Summit papers in the Future of Cities series, Principles for Digital Transformation in Cities (2022) and Perspectives on Government Services, Cities, and Technology (2019). The findings and recommendations presented are intended to have a long, interactive life; spark debate in panel discussions, workshops, and across media platforms; and take the conversation around these issues to new levels. Today’s context is a daunting one for cities. The hurdles are multiple and often inter-related: relatively high energy costs, inflation and interest rates; a lack of skilled workers; rising inequality in income and social inclusion; and mass migration. Additional, existential threats (climate change, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and global or regional conflict) may lead to the perception of ‘perma-crisis’, a continual state of disruption. City-specific problems, particularly in the first and third worlds (but less so in emerging countries), include: declining physical infrastructure, homelessness, lack of affordable housing, small business jeopardy, lack of green spaces, and lack of reliable broadband." ... How can smart city technologies best be selected, financed, and deployed to serve community interests?Which supply chain management approaches ensure optimal security and resiliency to stimulate urban economic growth?"
