That's me in the overalls next to my sister Maya. The two trees behind us are where my father taught us the alphabet & numbers. I love the intentionality my parents had in introducing us to learning. They even took a picture to commemorate the moment! This is one of my favorite outdoor memories. In the following picture, my parents are probably dreaming up ways to ensure their daughters become economically self-sufficient. I don't have a picture of Mr. Olmo; otherwise, I'd share it here. He worked for Migrant Ed and helped my sisters and me achieve college entrance. He is the type of network leader I aspire to be for the people I engage with through my work YES Nature to Neighborhoods. One that can leverage networks to increase access to diverse resources that cut across race, or social class for the upward mobility of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. You can hear more about my family's story and learn about effective social justice frameworks in the latest Joy Outside Podcast from Justice Outside. https://lnkd.in/gCwM4EXd #Grateful #Networkfornetworkleaders #joyoutside #immigrantstory #richmondcalifornia

The 2024 World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC Network) in Abu Dhabi was a success! Hundreds of presenters discussed the pivotal role of education in addressing climate change, biodiversity decline, sustainable development, and other challenges. Our team delivered three presentations focused on environmental justice, civic engagement, and the professional development of educators. I extend my sincere thanks to my colleagues for their exceptional contributions and teamwork: – Blanca Olivia Hernández, YES Nature to Neighborhoods, USA – Akiima Price, Friends of Anacostia Park, USA – Madhavi Latha Apparala, SCOREscotland, UK – Zarina Ahmad, Climate Sisters, UK – Beth Christie, University of Edinburgh, UK – Unji Lee , Tongyeong RCE, South Korea – Bomyung Seo, Tongyeong RCE, South Korea – Manuela Zamora, New York Sun Works, USA – Megan Nordgren, New York Sun Works, USA For case studies featuring the work of these educators, see https://lnkd.in/ep9qMGXZ Between presentations, I had the pleasure of engaging with thought leaders in the environmental education community, including Judy Braus, Kartikeya Sarabhai, Ranjan Datta, Bob Jickling, David Zandvliet, Daniel Schaffer, Gayatri Raghwa, Mirian Vilela, Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Eureta Rosenberg, Alberto Arenas, and many others. Their perspectives were invaluable. Special thanks to the Civic Ecology Lab at Cornell University, under the leadership of Marianne Krasny, and to Dorian McWain for their insights and feedback. Our work is supported by the financial contributions of the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Cornell Global Hubs, and Tongyeong RCE, to whom we are profoundly grateful. #EnvironmentalEducation #WEEC2024 #AbuDhabi #UAE #UnitedArabEmirates
