Former Chief Deputy Director & Gov Appointee at CAL FIRE // Working to achieve communities and landscapes resilient to wildfire
As a Tahoe Basin resident I am thrilled to see Fire Aside being deployed across 2 states and 5 fire agencies thanks to the Tahoe Fund and Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, along with organizations leaning in to use innovative tools to solve big problems. Implementing strategies to significantly reduce structure-to-structure conflagration has never been more important in light of the elevated levels of wildfire risk to communities. There is little doubt that society has entered into a new era where wildfire exposes and capitalizes on every vulnerability, particularly those in the built environment. We need to be asking ourselves everyday whether legacy programs are keeping up with the rapidly changing conditions we are now facing. The threats and potential losses of community risk reduction programs that have not adapted to the current wildfire paradigm are too high, and a business as usual approach will only lead to the same unacceptable losses. Tahoe has just taken one important step towards a resilient future, and in conjunction with the powerful analysis tools being used in Tahoe such as LandTender (Vibrant Planet) and implementation tools like BurnBot, Inc. our community risk reduction toolbox is amplified with technology and innovation. Focusing on the mitigations that matter most in the highest risk areas of a community will result in the best outcomes. Co-benefits of implementing a strategy that prioritizes these mitigations include creating a safe work environment for firefighters, more successful fire suppression efforts, ensuring residents are able to safely evacuate during emergencies, reduced economic impacts to local communities, fewer emissions from the combustion of hazardous materials and vegetation, preservation of the natural environment, and a more stable insurance market, to name a few. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team has a track record for early adoption and success implementing cross jurisdictional projects at scale, and this is no exception. Thank you to the Tahoe Fund and Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation for the amazing support to all the fire agencies in the Tahoe Basin. “The Tahoe Fund and Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation partnership bridges private sector funding to local fire agencies, brings advanced technologies like Fire Aside software to residents, and is exactly the type of brain trust we need to take action where federal and state funding is not enough and insurers are fleeing our communities.” Christopher Anthony Amy Berry Kate Dargan Marquis Scott Conway Caitlin Meyer Bill Clerico Mike Vollmer Don Moore Brittany Wray Yana Valachovic Bob Horton Marion W. You may have heard that the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has opened submissions on its Three-Year Plan (2024 – 2027) which proposes to cut its current funding of $120,000 per year to Te Mata Park Trust. This is a third of our annual funding, the loss of which could have very real consequences, including the possibility that health and safety issues (brought about by under-funded maintenance) could lead to Park closures. Cutting a third of our operating budget could put Te Mata Park Trust in an untenable position; fail to protect the region’s most important recreational, historical and cultural taonga; and undermine all the investment and volunteer time that has gone into the Park in recent years. We know that times are tough, and budgets are stretched, but if you believe that the Park should continue to be part-funded by HBRC, please have your say and make a submission. With the community’s support we hope to influence HBRC to continue to fund Te Mata Park Trust and ensure the Park is protected and enhanced for future generations. If you would like to make a submission to HBRC to support the retention of Te Mata Park’s funding, please go to the Protect the Peak page on the Te Mata Park website where we have summarised some useful information to assist you. To make the process easier, we have prepared some text that you might like to use in your submission. Thank you for supporting Te Mata Park. #protectthepeak https://lnkd.in/gX57wYry

Did you know that non-profit organizations, government agencies, individuals looking for housing, and university students enjoy complimentary access to the National Housing Preservation Database (NHPD)? The NHPD is an address-level inventory of federally assisted rental housing in the US. The agencies and departments that fund these programs have data on the individual programs that they manage, but there was no central location where all of these data are integrated. This made it difficult to get a clear picture of the current stock of public and affordable housing in a community. It also means those who wish to preserve public and affordable housing in their community could not easily get the information they need about particular properties. The NHPD was created to address these issues. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g799YTVS
