Reinventing planning and project control. I help planning engineers prepare progress reports in seconds and analyze the project with one click I Power BI, Project Control, Delay Analysis and Claims Consultant & Trainer
As a planning engineer, you should shift your perspective from “How can I prepare a report?” to “How can I add value?”. When you do so, everything else will fall into place. There is no standard procedure regarding how project control should be performed. Every planner has his/her own way of execution. That’s the beauty of project control. Having a value-oriented mindset goes beyond the report submission. For example, it allows you to: - Initiate meetings with some stakeholders, as necessary to help the project move forward. - Assist in drafting contractual correspondences by providing relevant inputs. - Communicate with the site team and provide a target/recovery plan. - Identify project delays and highlight opportunities for EOT claims. - Manage project risks and areas of concern effectively. A planner should have a proactive role instead of being passive. This means that planners should not wait until the work is requested from or delegated to them. They should go out there and make things happen. Templates are helpful but planning engineers should not be working to fill templates all the time. They should sometimes keep the target value in mind and go backward to design a workflow that achieves the desired outcome. So we should not start every process by filling a template but by the end goal itself then move backward. Communication is also key to making sure that everyone is on the same page. #powerbi #projectcontrol #primaverap6 #planningengineer #planningandscheduling #delayanalysis

Project control knowledge is NOT enough. You can be the most knowledgeable planner on earth but can't deliver results. Projects have become larger and more complex to support the needs of modern society and the growing population. Today, we have more: 🔵 Iconic towers in every major city. 🔵 Skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. 🔵 Larger infrastructure projects. 🔵 Whole cities to support urbanization. Every project has more challenges than ever before. A planner is required to: ✅ Develop and review more complicated Baselines. ✅ Monitor construction progress and prepare reports. ✅ Highlight engineering and procurement delays. ✅ Analyze the increasing change orders. ✅ Perform delay analysis. ✅ Prepare correspondences. ✅ Present corrective actions. ✅ Analyze manpower shortage and give recommendations. NOBODY has enough time in a day to do all of the above in an effective way. That's why using leverage against our limited time is MANDATORY to manage our projects today. Alternatively, companies must hire many planners to do the work but they won't because it requires a huge budget. Always find ways to apply leverage. #powerbi #projectcontrol #primaverap6 #planningengineer #planningandscheduling #delayanalysis

Your point about not relying solely on a negative float for schedule assessment is spot-on! The interplay between critical path activities and earned value is essential for a comprehensive view of project performance. It's a reminder that successful project management is a multifaceted discipline. #ProjectManagement #EarnedValueAnalysis
Reinventing planning and project control. I help planning engineers prepare progress reports in seconds and analyze the project with one click I Power BI, Project Control, Delay Analysis and Claims Consultant & Trainer
Many Planning Engineers use only the amount of negative total float to quantify schedule delays. ❌ This is not 100% accurate. Refer to the below image while I explain what I mean. ➡️ Activities highlighted in red The longest path consists of the activities highlighted in red. If the Contractor performs adequate progress that meets the planned work, you will have a zero total float. These activities are critical and are therefore sensitive to time. ➡️ Activities highlighted in orange On the other hand, the activities highlighted in orange are rich in positive total float and bear a huge amount of cost. If the Contractor fails to execute them as planned, the overall project float might not be impacted or turn negative. However, the earned value cost will be severely impacted. 🔵 in conclusion, you can't solely depend on the negative float to measure project performance. ✅ Earned value indicators are also crucial. In some cases, you can report zero float (the project is expected to be completed on time), while at the same time, you might have a negative variance % based on earned value cost calculations. The slow rate of progress in the orange activities resulted in low earned value outputs but caused no impact on the negative float. #powerbi #projectcontrol #primaverap6 #planningengineer #planningandscheduling #delayanalysis
