The answer to the question is clearly “no.” Data shows that #genderequality will take decades and perhaps even centuries to acheive. #diversity #equality #opportunity #equalprotectionunderthelaw #womensrights #politics #economics
Are women now lording it over men? Is it men who are now oppressed? A staggering number of people, particularly young men, now think so - despite all the evidence to the contrary. There are still twice as many men as women in our Parliament, in a supposedly representative democracy. Nine out of ten of the FTSE 100 CEOs are male. Globally, women earn only 77% of what men are paid. There is still a long way to go before women are equal to men. Yet, according to a new study by the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, nearly half the British population agree it is job done on women’s equality — up from less than a third who thought that five years ago. Worse, 47 per cent of Brits think we’ve done so much to promote women’s equality that we are discriminating against men. Gen Z men are much more likely to believe this than their fathers or grandfathers. When I was researching The Authority Gap, I bumped into a former Editor of The Times, who told me that my thesis was out of date. He said he sat on lots of selection panels for boards, and that they only ever appointed women. “It’s impossible for a man to get on a board these days,” he told me. The very next day, I received my monthly email enumerating all the UK’s recent board appointments: it was 20 men and 19 women. In other words, the ratio was pretty equal, and it was just as easy for a man to get a board job as for a woman. But my former boss felt not levelled but flattened by this push to greater equality. This must be one reason why some men mistakenly feel that gender equality has gone too far. Another is the lies that are spread to young men by extreme misogynists online. And now that girls outperform boys at every educational level, from nursery to PhD, young men may fear that women will outclass them in the workforce too. Sadly, though, research shows that young women are still promoted less frequently to manager level than men, despite their better academic credentials. What do you think lies behind this notion that men are now the oppressed gender? And what can we do persuade people, particularly young men, that gender equality hasn’t gone too far? #genderequality #theauthoritygap

EU agrees on inaugural law to criminalise gender-based violence. The agreement comes almost two years after The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, first proposed the law to mark International Women’s Day 2022 - where the theme was “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow". https://lnkd.in/gHPz798t At WAVE we are asking what needs to be done this International Women's Day to ensure we meet the focus for 2024 - "Count Her In: Invest in Women. Accelerate Progress". Because women’s economic empowerment is central to a gender equal world. https://lnkd.in/dXWu8px #IWD2024 #notogenderbasedviolence

This is important and worrying research. Particularly combined with the findings that young women are becoming more liberal compared to young men. However, anyone who claims to have simple solutions to it is best dodged. My main takeaway is that I need to try to dump the term 'toxic masculinity'. I've previously thought it has some value but the polling is clear that I'm wrong on that. More than anything I think about my 16-year-old daughter's response to all this. Faced with boys who point to suicide stats, poorer academic results and loneliness as issues that affect boys and men her incisive response is simply: "Who created this society that is afflicted by those issues?" Because it's not women. It's a valid point. A society shaped by women does not look like the one we have. So while 'toxic masculinity' might be best consigned to the dustbin of history and I hear those that say young men attracted by the likes of Andrew Tate ought to be 'called in' not 'called out' we mustn't lose sight of the fact that this is on men. We created this society that apparently doesn't work for us (which begs the question does it actually work for most men after all..) and we are on the hook to put it right. How do we do that? Is it by appealing to men's better nature and the promise of equality? Or is it via some sort of appeal to self interest? Or a combination of the two? Thoughts welcome!

Today, on International Women's Day, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the significant progress we have made for gender equality and the road that still lies ahead. A reminder that in the United States, the 19th Amendment marked the empowerment of women with the right to vote in 1920. In Canada, women gained the right to vote at the federal level on May 24, 1918. It is important to note, however, that the right to vote for women was not granted across all provinces in Canada at the same time. Some provinces granted women the right to vote earlier than others, with Quebec being the last to do so in 1940. While we've made great progress, significant work lies ahead. Change has occurred across generations as people united in their vision of a better world. International Women’s Day reminds us to take a moment and reflect. On International Women's Day, let's take a moment to reflect on how we can support gender equality. It's not as simply as congratulate women; we must commit to advocating for a better future. As we celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout history, we must also remember the fights and struggles they endured. Join me in using #IWD2024 to spread awareness and share your own commitments to supporting women. I commit to continue sponsoring, mentoring, coaching women, and ensuring they have a seat at the table and encouraging them to own that sit.
