❤️❤️❤️❤️ Lives and Pathological Demand Avoidance* (PDA) *or Pervasive Drive for Autonomy As a paediatric OT, I've had the privilege of working alongside many young friends with a PDA profile. For one bright young girl, waiting for her to initiate conversation rather than imposing social demands has been key. For another incredibly insightful little human, sometimes just being at OT that day is demand enough. They've used a 'life' in coming to the space, and I'll do my best not to deplete that further. On others, we take on new challenges together. Through these relationships, I've learned the importance of understanding; in how they might experience the world and how the way I show up influences this. The power of relationships has been one of my greatest lessons. Building trust, rapport, and a strong therapeutic alliance is crucial. As therapists, we may have goals and plans for our sessions, but if we don't invest time in relationship-building or push our agenda, this isn't likely to set anyone up for success. This is especially true for individuals with PDA. When this connection feels safe, requests or new activities [using a low demand approach] are less likely to be perceived as overwhelming demands or a threat. Trust is a truly powerful tool, but one that needs to be earned and nurtured. Another lesson is how supportive using myself within a 'low demand' lens can be for all young people. I often find myself using indirect language like "I wonder if we can..." or "I can't quite figure this out, perhaps we can try together...?". Using A/A choices and affording autonomy wherever possible. Sometimes, I'll try activities myself without verbal prompting, allowing my young friends to then make the choice if they want to join in without me asking directly. I am the first to say I am far from perfect within this. I have unintentionally triggered a nervous system response or survival mode with inadvertent demands. Reflection and owning my part to play means that when I see that young person next I can try again to be better for them; use a different approach, strip demands back, focus on positive engagement and play together, trying to meet them where they are at and work to rebuild and strengthen trust.
