50 pages? Who’s going to read that? And on top of that, it’s a policy case! My teammates and I were on the verge of dropping out of the Ecogellence: A Policy Case Competition hosted by PGDAV. The case problem was 50 pages long—yes, FIFTY—and it wasn’t some rom-com; it was a policy case! For context: A policy case isn’t just a document—it’s a challenge where you act as the government, tackle a country-level issue, and propose actionable policies to solve it. Sounds intense, right? It definitely was. First thought? “𝘠𝘦𝘩 𝘴𝘬𝘪𝘱 𝘬𝘳𝘵𝘦 𝘩 𝘺𝘦𝘩 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘴𝘦 𝘯𝘩𝘪 𝘩𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘨𝘢” Then we thought, “𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘵?” On the day, we stood before the judges, unsure of what to expect. To our surprise, they didn’t just appreciate our effort—they praised the level of detail and thoughtfulness in our solution. And the best part? The case we almost quit on earned us FIRST PLACE! 🏆 This experience taught me: 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘇𝗼𝗻𝗲.

We know that content syndication is becoming ever-more popular, and that means COUNTER Metrics needs to find a way to allow people to share compliant usage reports from the syndicated platform to the original publisher. That will mean publishers have consistent, comparable usage metrics from all the syndicated usage platforms they work with, and can tell which ones are delivering return on the time and effort invested in syndication. Equally, we might be able to facilitate aggregate institutional reporting, so librarians only have to check one report for all of the content from a publisher. Our draft policy is open for comment until this Friday, so if you have thoughts about syndicated usage, now's the time to share them!

Read this policy text “While the report refrains from prescribing specific legislative measures, it calls upon the European Commission (EC) to regularly scrutinise and analyse the adequacy and suitability of current digital regulations and, and if it deemed necessary, to propose new legislative initiatives in this regard.” 43 words = convoluted (seems familiar? 😳 ) Now let’s try this again “This report asks the Commission to scrutinise digital regulations and propose new initiatives if required.” 15 words. 🥰 😘 How did we do that?
