Reminder: Periods don’t stop for major competitions 🚫🩸 With #Paris2024 fully underway we wanted to post a quick reminder that menstruation doesn’t stop during major sporting events 🩸 Despite increased visibility of women in sport, and progress in gender equity, menstruation is still a topic rarely discussed amongst athletes. Tess Howard, an England Hockey player, is also the founder of Inclusive Sportswear CIC, an organisation which advocates for inclusive sportswear policies for schools, clubs and sports organisations. Her campaigning work led to a policy change in GB Hockey, allowing women hockey players to choose between skorts and shorts. Having more choice over sportswear is not only more inclusive for those of different cultures and faiths* but can also make athletes feel more comfortable on their period. The ability to wear longer shorts or leggings can provide an extra layer of comfort and protection so athletes don’t have to worry about leaks when they’re competing in a major sporting competition! Pretty bloody important we think! 🩸 We’d love to see more athletes speaking out about periods to help reduce stigma! Let’s support and empower more women athletes to speak openly about their experiences 🙌 *It’s worth pointing out that although this year’s event features more inclusive sportswear options, French sports women are barred from wearing the Hijab, resulting in some Muslim athletes being unable to participate in this year's games. Only 29% of girls dream of reaching the top in sport and roughly 1 in every 2 girls quit sport by the age of 15.* Want to increase women's participation in sports? Want to achieve gender equity in sports? Maybe, just maybe, let's stop forcing women to wear uniforms they are not comfortable in. It is so disappointing to see a brand like Nike falling so short on this, especially when they have in the past, been among the first brands to innovate and offer apparel with built-in period protection. Separately, at the Camogie Association's annual Congress, earlier this month, a motion to change the uniform was rejected. The first proposal by Great Britain was to include shorts as part of the playing uniform, which resulted in 45% of the delegates voting in favour and 55% against. The second motion, proposed by Tipperary, was to replace the skirt/skort entirely with shorts, as part of the playing uniform. This motion resulted in 36% of the delegates voting in favour, and 64% voting against. A brilliant post by Katherine Evans raised the topic of PPE fashion shows, highlighting that women in construction simply want safe protective personal equipment. Clothing that’s comfortable, fits, and is designed for a woman’s body shape. Goggles and hats that are smaller because women generally have smaller heads. Reflective strips that sit in the right position to correctly reflect the light. It’s not about fashion or being attractive, it’s about safety. But this is not a new phenomenon, and if we use sport as an example, clothing has never been about enhancing women’s performance but either a) enhancing or b) reducing the male gaze. 1. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Olympic Games Committee controlled women's outfits. They were not allowed to distract the male athletes. 2. At the beginning of the 21st century, in 2004, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said he wanted women footballers to wear tighter shorts to attract sponsors. 3. During the 2021 European Championships, the Dutch beach handball team wore shorts instead of a bikini. As a result, they were fined EUR 150 by the European Handball Federation, even though men are allowed to wear shorts (source: all DLA Piper) The right clothing influences performance in sports, and the right clothing reduces injury in construction. In the lead-up to the 2024 Olympics, Illuminated Brand Strategy will be sharing a closer look at the female running experience from the point of view of runners interviewed at the Boston Marathon last month. The aim is to shine a light on somewhat overlooked themes and to provoke thought around the depiction and representation of female athletes by media and brands. The first installment of the content series poses the question: how much of the athletic experience is viewed through a male lens? 2024 will be the first year that gender parity is achieved at an Olympics. Has the staggering time it has taken for parity to be reached impacted how we view and measure athletic success? We know, on average, that men are faster and stronger as athletes. But can brands do more to bring to light the innate qualities and strengths female athletes have? While I respect everyone's right to self-identify, the recent boxing match raises some important questions. An athlete, born male and later transitioning to female, faced controversy for competing in the women's category. This individual had previously faced a ban due to eligibility issues related to gender identity. Scientific research indicates that transitioning does not alter physical attributes such as muscle mass, strength, and stamina, which remain aligned with those of one's birth gender. Given these factors, it's worth considering whether competing in the men's category might have been a more equitable choice. The separation of male and female categories in sports exists for numerous scientific and physiological reasons. It's crucial that we ensure fairness and respect for all athletes while maintaining the integrity of competitive sports.
