Gov. Wes Moore in POLITICO with Christine Zhu on the Bloomberg Philanthropies Innovation Team coming to the State of Maryland: “That will create the kind of nexus that we think is necessary for us to accomplish our big goals, like ending child poverty, like creating cradle-to-career education for all of our kids, like having an economy that grows and sees everybody.” https://lnkd.in/eiUr_BVc

First, Happy International Women's Day! There are too many amazing women in my life to name them all here. Second, an impact investment fund that may have passed you by. The Church of England committed £100 million commencing in 2023 for 9 years, so just over £10M per year to assist those communities and individuals affected by the legacy of chattel slavery in which the church was involved (of which I am one). On 4 March 2024 the Church's Independent Oversight Group made a series of recommendations about how the impact investment fund could be improved. You can read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eWZqtJY8 A few questions and points which occur to me: 1. Can voluntary collective redress be effectively used to remedy historical wrongs in circumstances where those impact may not have locus standi or an international and/or supranational court or tribunal to which they can appeal? 2. Could alternative dispute resolution such as mediation or arbitration play a role where intended beneficiaries are dissatisfied with the administration of such funds or is a more public forum required in the spirit of open justice? 3. Could there ever be scope for some form of supranational treaty-based restorative justice foundation to which individuals could refer these types of issues? 4. Given the volume of individuals who are potentially impacted could AI be used to assist in the analysis and categorisation of the data in relation to the same? (I am currently undertaking the Oxford University/Said Business School AI Programme as such AI is front of mind!) 4. Lots of people, notably those in financial services, may not have an appreciation of how deeply slavery was embedded into, impacted on and shaped some of our major financial institutions and economic infrastructure. I would therefore recommend Eric Williams' seminal tome which may provide some helpful context - notably around the end of slavery. It's a small but useful book! #CollectiveRedress #ReparativeJustice #RestorativeJustice #CurrentAwareness #AI #ChurchofEngland

Often, policies are not communicated in ways that make them accessible and relatable. Importantly, how do policies impact us, and what is our role as common people? As the world becomes datafied, with technology impacting us on a fundamental and human level, we need something more connecting and personal. I'm increasingly finding value in simpler ways of communicating complex topics—especially now that I'm back in school, where theory and technicality are tenacious. Check out these everyday digital policy stories and consider reimagining the impact of emerging digital transitions with a focus on people, planet, and technology . . . #DigitalPolicy #TechImpact #DatafiedWorld #HumanCenteredTech #DigitalTransition #PolicyCommunication #DigitalRights

What research topic should UNICEF Innocenti focus on? We asked, and almost 400 children and young people responded: "Democracy". With this research agenda, we engaged a diverse group of children and young people, futurists, advocates and scholars to collect insights on democracy in the present and in the future. We also asked an AI program to generate a new vision for democracy to test how such technology can be used to foster creativity in governance. What we found is that children and young people care about democracy. We learned of initiatives and innovations around the world that aim to create a democracy that is more resilient and representative of the people. We also realized many were eager to see more intergenerational solidarity in strengthening democracy. Dive into the report to learn more about how we can build a democratic future for present and future generations! "The fact that laws were being made for 1.3 billion citizens with the feedback of only a few didn’t sit well with me." - Antaraa Vasudev From this thought, key questions emerged: How can we enable citizens to become active participants in democratic systems? Could citizens and governments meet one another halfway? What is the role of technology in addressing this gap? Antaraa and Anjali Hans answer these questions and dive into the journey of Civis, reimaginations and key shifts along the way, adopting a citizen-centric #platform approach and more in our latest blog here: https://bit.ly/cvslnkd World Justice Project | EkStep Foundation #socialimpact #governance #technology #socialjustice

Insights 2024 published! Understanding Society’s annual Insights publication is out, looking this year at #politicalengagement and identity, electoral behaviour and #climatechange. Insights showcases research using Understanding Society which is relevant to government policy. This year, in anticipation of a general election, the report examines: The youth vote – after the disputed ‘youthquake’ of 2017, what do we know about this period in our lives, during which many views are shaped? What influences our political thinking, and what lasting effects does it have? Changing lives, changing communities – in an apparent era of ‘identity politics’, what can research tell us about our sense of who we are, the communities we belong to, and life events, and how these influence our vote? Climate change – a significant issue for governments and policy, and likely to shape future economic policy. How do we view it, how do we respond to policy to tackle it, and can protests change our minds? Download Insights here: https://lnkd.in/eau5X7yD

My mom recently sent me a link to an article: https://lnkd.in/ek5k4KPH And after I read it over, I asked her: "Do you realize this article was written by 'AI'? It's really important that you know how to recognize articles that may not have factual information in them." And she asked me "How do you know??" 1) The voice / tone of the article is "robotic". I've read enough curated AI outputs to get a sense of what one "sounds" like. If you read the text out loud, it just sounds stilted. 2) The comments on the article complain about facts in the article being inaccurate. An indicator that there may be "hallucination" (what an awful and normalizing word for misinformation). 3) I popped the image of the "author" into Google reverse image search and got exactly zero results. Surprising that someone with a byline wouldn't show up there - but not surprising if that person doesn't actually exist (https://lnkd.in/eRKSDZwt). 4) When I clicked on the publisher link, I saw that it was from "West Palm Beach News" in Florida. Writing a local article about a town in Arizona?? When I looked at that "news" site, there was zero information about who ran it, nothing on their privacy policy or terms and conditions to indicate any real world entities behind it.
