Not sure I agree with the specific targeting of DEI offices, but the part about administrative bloat resonates. Want a more diverse faculty? Pay the people in the classrooms doing the hard work (day-in, day-out) what they're worth. The only reason I can "afford" to be a professor at a California State University is because I have the financial safety net of a parent who can help when I need things like car repairs (e.g., generational wealth). I cannot in good conscience recommend this career path to promising students from diverse backgrounds unless they come from generational wealth (most of whom do not), especially when they can get paid what they are worth in industry and potentially start to build their own wealth to pass on. The only way to get decent pay at a CSU is to - you guessed it - become an administrator.

Valuable post related to the higher education ecosystem by Prof. Scott Galloway with valuable inputs in the comments sections. True for most countries I think. Two points I am curious about: (a). I am wondering if the issue is actual lack of data in the HigherEd space or is it about the lack of access to key data for decision makers such as students/families. Its a known fact that there is a significant amount of accuracy and data loss that happens before data reaches the final beneficiaries. (b). Jobs that are created are filled up regular people leading regular lives with needs, families and aspirations. Talking about cutting jobs, be it in the education ecosystem or in the defence or oil ecosystem will only face resistance. Natural. Changing the content of jobs, learning, unlearning...might be a more useful way.

The Biden administration allocated just about that sum, $500 billion, for student debt relief before the Supreme Court blocked it. Despite the White House’s good intentions, I do not believe you can ask the 2/3 of Americans who didn’t go to college to bail out the third who did. In addition, loan bailouts are primitive chemotherapy — they shrink the tumor but make the cancer worse, as they also bail out universities who have less pressure to address the underlying disease: cost. In exchange for this $1 billion, over a decade, schools must: 👉 Reduce tuition by 2% a year; 👉 expand enrollments 6% a year via investments in technology and infrastructure; and 👉 increase vocational/certificate programs to 20% of degrees granted. The net result, in 10 years, would be a doubling of freshman seats and a halving of cost (inflation adjusted). #nomercynomalice

Despite the decline in federal stimulus, legislators increased funding for public colleges in 2023, focusing on financial aid. However, whether this can offset the drop in tuition revenue remains uncertain.
