"As an educator, I know that the best way to grow your students is to grow yourself. And it seemed like the next natural step after getting my teaching certificate was to enroll in a rank change program. I chose this rank change program because of the flexibility and affordability." – Pamela Wood, BloomBoard Rank Change Program Graduate and 1st Grade Teacher, Marshall County School District, Kentucky In partnership with select regional service centers, BloomBoard developed a low-cost continuing education option that supports Kentucky teachers in earning rank change to deepen their teaching practice and move them up the pay scale. #ICYMI: Annie Kessler, Executive Director of City Year New York, was featured on CBS News last month. She spoke about our work to recruit Student Success coaches to curb the teacher shortage in New York City. "A lot of mentors come in knowing they want to go into education, and we give them experience in the classroom and training to put them on that path. Then we have a lot of young people who come in and they really don't know what they want to do next, and then they decide over the course of the year that education is the career path for them." The role a teacher plays as not only an educator, but a mentor, a friend, a confidant, and a trusted adult is so critical to the success of students at our programs. Teachers drive the change we can see from students in their education, which directly impacts their overall life. Here are some things to think about when it comes to the education kids are receiving: 🎓Education is one of the main keys to the success for kids. Especially underprivileged kids who often end up as students in our programs. 🎒Education is one of the places where students can feel rewarded, see achievements, and envision success in their future, which is critical for their long term goals. 🏫Education produces hope, which is a powerful feeling. This teachers appreciation week, we want to encourage people everywhere to say thank you to their teacher friends, family, and acquaintances and help advocate for education professionals everywhere. Doing amazing work and changing lives takes a lot of hard work and passion, and we are thankful our educators have that day in and day out in their roles at ROP. #Teacherappreciation #Educators #Educationprofessionals #Underprivelagedyouth #youthempowerment #Youthadvocacy

An action step Jordahl Elementary had this year was to reduce teacher burnout while improving teacher efficacy. Through our intentional steps here are the results: 100% of teachers report being a more effective teacher. 100% of teachers report having more time to plan. 95% of teachers report having more personal time. According to the Rosenberg Self-Esteem scale, 18% of staff grew into typical self-esteem, and 28% grew into above typical self-esteem. 0% of staff resulted in low self-esteem. We saw a rise in academic achievement and growth (highest it’s been in 5 years). And the kicker:100% of k-5 teaching staff and 36 out of 37 certified staff are returning next year! WOW! 97% retention rate! #family#teachersdeservebetter#happyteachersmakehappykids #jordahl#ffc8

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week to all the teachers out there!! First off, I wanted to give a shoutout to teachers everywhere for dedicating themselves to teaching their students and making classrooms an engaging and safe space for all. As an aspiring school psychologist, I am in awe of how much you bring to the school climate. But I can’t talk about teacher appreciation week without bringing up the reality of the field today: that thousands of teachers are quitting their jobs due to outrageous student behaviors, low pay, and poor support from administration. This has caused teachers to advise the younger generation to stay away from teaching as a profession, which means hardly any teachers are entering the field now. We can’t have a Teacher Appreciation Week without teachers. School districts, don’t just tell teachers they are appreciated; show them by paying them more and giving them support. And parents, raise your kids to respect teachers and other adults so that teachers aren’t overwhelmed. By doing this, we can bring joy and happiness back to the education field, and create teachers who truly love what they do ❤️📚✏️ #teachers #education #schools #students #teachershortage #teacherappreciationweek

#TeachersMatters Teaching the next generation has never been an easy career, but the past two years have tested the education community like nothing else in our lifetime. Unfortunately, the worst may be yet to come, as the challenges to effective education just keep piling up. “This is a great profession, and educators love what they do, but if we don’t start to treat them better widespread teacher shortages are likely,” says Dr. Lynn Gangone, president of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. What many people don’t realize is that teaching is just one role teachers fill in the course of a normal day. It’s not just academics that they worry about or can only focus on. Kids spend hours with their teachers every day, and (as any parent can attest) they need much more than just academic instruction. “Demands are placed on teachers to help students solve problems with peers that occur in the classroom and at recess,”. Instead of asking why educators chose their profession, we should ask why they stay. And the answer is simple. “They stay, because it is the place they believe they can make the biggest difference,”. #thoughts

Experiences > Prescribed Curriculum After 17 years in a classroom I can confidently say that state mandated curriculum is far less important than exposing kids to unique experiences. Money, politics, and selfish desires have become too interwoven into the fabric of a formal education. The “best practices” have become a reflection of the people that have too little or no classroom experience at all. Ideals no longer meet the reality of today’s student population. So how do we as educators and parents combat this? We provide our students with organic, stimulating experiences whenever possible. Take the field trip. Do the STEM Day. Travel if you have the means. Use project-based learning. Teach life skills. Show our youth that our world has more to offer than standarized testing and flavor-of-the-month initiatives. My wife and I are lucky enough to be able to take our son to Wyoming for three weeks this summer. He will experience a working dude ranch, Yellowstone National Park, and the Badlands. Something tells me those experiences will stay with him longer than much of what the state of Ohio says he needs to succeed.
