That he will win a historic third term is hardly in dispute. But as chatter of a tight race in multiple constituencies grows, the questions to be answered - the day after - include: where does India go from here, after a long campaign that involves debate not just about national pride and infrastructural development, but also about election fairness, noxious remarks about minority communities, and the country’s identity as a secular society.
Will Prime Minister Narendra Modi earn a third term in office...and as emphatically as exit polls suggest? Follow the ST breaking news blog tracking India's election as results trickle out for the rest of this frantic Tuesday.

It is the economy stupid! The Indian state has since the 90s moved from heavily centralised state production to market mechanisms to stimulate economic production. Both the mechanisms have proven to be insufficient to generate revenue surplus, which could be used to bridge the income gaps of citizens through welfare schemes. This creates anti-incumbency sentiment. It is not only Modi who has been cut to size. The generous spending on welfare and social justice policies of the state governments of Andhra Pradesh and Odisa was not enough to keep them in power. India has severe structural problems - lack of resources (oil, rare minerals); lack of manpower (poor education standards and delivery); lack of infrastructure (roads, energy, water, health). It is a vicious cycle that cannot be broken overnight.
Narendra Modi’s most telling error in the general election was to mishandle what is still the most important fault line in Indian society: caste https://econ.st/3x8AySK Illustration: Lan Truong

One of the most significant underlying reasons behind the recent Lok Sabha election results in Maharashtra is the political drama that unfolded in the state over the last five years with alliances made and broken every single day and new equations created to claim a stake to power, leaving the voters confused and angry. The biggest setbacks for the BJP came from Maharashtra and UP! Maharashtra was always going to be a tough nut to crack with all the party changes and voter shifts. The political landscape there has been all over the place (and not in a good way). I doubt even the most seasoned politicians and pollsters could predict the wind's direction in Maharashtra these days. In 2019 they were at a very strong position in Maharashtra but can the same be said now? UP must have been a real shocker for them. They bagged 65 and 71 seats in the last two elections, so this time’s performance is way below par, especially considering their positive governance track record compared to previous governments. There’s going to be a lot of introspection and diverse viewpoints needed to figure out what went wrong there. After all, UP is the most politically significant state in India. #IndianElections #IndianElections2024 #Modi #NDA #BJP #Congress #RahulGandhi #ShivSena #NCP

The entire US political leadership meeting the Indian Opposition in India and in the US That can only mean the following things - 1. Lots of action in India before the US elections 2. Lots of protests and anti Indian Govt action across States run by INDI Alliance 3. Attempt to withdraw support for the Modi Govt 4. That can mean the Opposition attempts to form the Government which is not possible because of lack of numbers 5. Mid term elections as the other option which the existing 543 members will not want 6. As a result, the Modi Government can face lots of problems (which they have over the last 10 years) but there is little possibility for it to be removed 7. What’s also possible is the anti Modi brigade begins to ask for Modi’s removal and settle for a more conservative face such as Nitin Gadkari 8. That too is a far shot because the vote is for Modi and not anyone else. 9. Tough times ahead for PM Modi 10. Tougher times ahead for the machinery that wants Modi out because he thinks for the Nation and not for himself.
