Eye watering bill rises for many water customers announced today. Consumers understand the need for investment to improve services, but they don’t trust companies to deliver it. There will also be anger at what looks like a reward for the poor performance in recent years and the historic abuses of bonuses and dividends. Many cannot afford these rises and need help. Yet companies are not yet doing enough to help with affordability. It’s a pivotal moment for the industry, water companies are not trusted, it is now essential they are held to account for their performance and actions. They must deliver on ALL their promises over the next five years. Now is the time to step up. CCW Ofwat
📈 Water bills in England and Wales will rise by 36pc by 2030, the regulator has said, as suppliers race to tackle pollution issues and mounting debt pressures. Ofwat said charges will increase by £157 over the next five years - equivalent to about £31 a year - sending the average annual bill soaring from £440 a year to £597. The regulator’s final determination on water bills comes after it released draft decisions in July which would have allowed water #companies to increase bills by an average of 21pc, before inflation is added, over the next five years to help fund £88bn of investment in improving services and the environment. Our latest blog from Jeevan Jones explores how water bills have fallen in real terms since 2010 and what this has meant for investment. Had average water and wastewater bills simply kept pace with inflation since 2010, they would be £110 (or 25%) higher today. Over the 14 years since 2010, that’s an average saving of £750 saving for every household. To put that into context, added together for every single household in England and Wales that’s equivalent to £18 billion, which companies could have invested in improvements. Water companies have proposed investing £108bn over the next 5-years to secure our water supplies, unlock economic growth & end sewage in rivers and seas. Read the new blog: https://lnkd.in/eCVT_5FY

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Water bills to rise by £123 a year in April We’re being told to celebrate the ‘record investment’ of water companies, but in reality, it is the public that will pay the price for their decades of neglect. Instead of fixing crumbling infrastructure, water companies have saddled themselves with billions in junk debt, leaving us with sewage-choked rivers, and paying extortionate interest rates through bill hikes. Communities and customers won’t be fooled by this web of lies. - James Wallace, CEO of River Action UK #endsewagepollution #rescuebritainsrivers
