“Please help us. No payment for two months.” A handwritten message from a crew member on a transport vessel contracted by Equinor, was given to a quay worker when the vessel called on a Norwegian port. It was thereafter passed on to a labour union representative. This incident happened two years ago. Follow-up included both an investigation by an independent company and efforts to ensure that the crew was compensated and did not suffer employment consequences for speaking up. The human rights requirements we put in our contracts are important but will not always lead to decent treatment of workers. Operating all over the world, we encounter varying levels of respect for workers’ rights. This case shows that workers’ rights can be under pressure also in supply chains and geographies we normally consider low risk. It underscores the importance of robust risk assessments and close collaboration and follow-up with our suppliers. I commend the involved teams and union representatives for their efforts in addressing this incident and how they have used the learnings to improve the way we work with human rights in our operations. Collaboration is key to further progress. As we look ahead, Equinor remains committed to respecting human rights, not only because it is good for people – it’s good business.
