On this week, four years ago, the 250,000 square-foot Miami Beach Convention Center was converted into a 450-bed field hospital, including 400 acute care patient rooms, 50 isolation pods, nursing stations, an onsite laboratory and pharmacy, and support areas… in less than two weeks! The project was part of the US Army Corps of Engineers' effort to alleviate pressure on local hospitals from the anticipated surges of COVID-19 patients. Portable ICU maker Thornhill strikes landmark $356-million U.S. defence supply deal +++ When the pandemic arrived four years ago several Canadian companies suddenly found themselves facing a surreal opportunity, to make a windfall while helping humanity. Thornhill Medical of Toronto was one of those companies. As a small company making innovative portable intensive care unit technology - systems including ventilators that could be packed up into a golf-bag-sized shoulder-slung kit - Thornhill quickly landed a $223.7-million contract from a federal government eager to source masses of ventilators amid an acute global shortage. I saw Thornhill's name in the government press release announcing a mass procurement of PPE and other health technologies and reached out to speak with CEO Lesley Gouldie. It's been fascinating to track the company's progress ever since. A company with just 30 employees at the time and that had made its products inhouse managed to quickly strike a contract manufacturing relationship with Ontario auto parts giant Linamar Corporation that continues to this day and helped it scale up. Even more impressively, Thornhill's leadership anticipated the rapid scale down of the business that would come later in the pandemic. They planned out a strategy to ensure the adjustment wouldn't lead to Thornhill's financial ruin, as befell some suppliers that received large COVID-19 government contracts. Something else: Thornhill, a University of Toronto spinout, used the Canadian contract as a compelling proof point and springboard to fuel its long game strategy of pursuing substantial sales with the U.S. Armed Forces. Nearly four years later, that effort has paid off. Today we are reporting that Thornhill has been awarded one of the largest contracts in years between a small Canadian supplier and the United States Department of Defense to supply its portable ICUs and toaster-sized anesthetic systems to its various branches - Army, Navy, Marines, etc. It's a deal that could be worth up to US$356-million. Many Canadian innovators have complained for years that it's harder to sell to their own governments than to those abroad, denying them a strategically important domestic reference and calling card to grow into global, prosperous, job-creating exporters and contributors to GDP and productivity gains. Thornhill's success over the past four years should give plenty of food for thought to innovators, governments and their procurement arms hoping to address this situation. Meanwhile, the deal is just a warm-up for what Thornhill hopes will be an even bigger prize.
