Former bodyguard turned counsellor/resilience coach/author of a poignant book on mentalhealth & the loss of my daughters/speaker/ advocating accessible mental health strategies in workplaces & education settings.
Last week in various schools, I focused on addressing the issue of knife awareness and loneliness using the character and scenarios of 'Little Billy' as an example, once again. We delved into the reasons why Little Billy might carry a knife (even if he had no intention of using it), the motivation behind it (commonly fear) and the risk that this can bring both to the possessor of the knife or the receiver. By carrying a knife, individuals put themselves at risk of prosecution, and many end up in A&E due to being stabbed with their own weapon. Carrying a knife, regardless of intent, can lead to severe trouble and potentially fatal consequences. In our story, we also explored a difficult scenario where the likelihood of using the knife increased, perhaps without him even realising it in the moment. We also discussed the reasons why other youngsters might carry knives, some of which include self-defence, accessibility, upbringing, peer pressure - seeking dominance or respect, mental reassurance, instilling fear, and climbing the social ladder. It's important to consider all these factors. Merely telling kids in schools that ‘knives are bad’ is not enough........ In another school, children have bravely opened up about their feelings of profound loneliness. One boy admitted that despite having people around him, he still carried a sense of isolation. It was the first time he had vocalised his loneliness to anyone. None of his friends or family knew about his true emotional state. This was a significant step for him. It would have been easy to keep his loneliness bottled up, which could have had a detrimental impact on his well-being. That's why programs like "Safeguarding Me" focusing on issues such as loneliness are crucial in schools. They provide young people with a safe space to express themselves, an avenue to share their true feelings. Picture provided is myself teaching the kids self protection skills which is also part of my 'Safeguarding Me ' programmes. 'Healthy and positive boundaries create a sense of security and stability' The Family Assist Service have been busy creating more jars & sticks for one of our families this week. This method introduces boundaries into the home with a positive and fun twist! Promoting independence and choice to our children. But why are boundaries important for children? Children need to know what you expect. This helps them to know what is appropriate behaviour and helps to set a tone for a child’s emotional development. Other benefits of healthy boundaries include: ⭐Helping the child feel safe and secure. ⭐Encourage the child to learn healthy limits. ⭐Supporting the child get ready to experience the world independently. ⭐Helping the child to learn healthy socialisation.
