Healing from past trauma becomes a more comforting experience with a gentle and loving companion by your side. Meet Maslow, the extraordinary therapy dog chosen for this vital role. Maslow frequently participates in the weekly counseling group sessions at Renewal House, offering a furry bundle of comfort, affection, and unconditional love to the residents—individuals who have formerly experienced homelessness. Research has shown that pet therapy, involving interactions with animals like Maslow, can be particularly beneficial for those dealing with past trauma. The calming presence of Maslow not only provides emotional support but also creates a non-judgmental and safe space for residents to open up and share their experiences. The therapeutic bond formed with Maslow aids in reducing anxiety, alleviating stress, and fostering a sense of security. The response from the residents has been overwhelmingly positive, and Maslow is welcome at any time! #TherapyDog #HealingWithAnimals #PetTherapy #ComfortCompanion #UnconditionalLove #TraumaHealing #EmotionalSupportAnimal #ReducingAnxiety #StressRelief #SecurityAndComfort #AnimalAssistedTherapy #PetLove #CounselingCompanion #HealingFromTrauma #SupportiveEnvironment #FosteringWellness #PositiveResponse #RenewalHouseStories #CompassionateCompanionship

Turning vision into action, influencing positive evolution in healthcare, raising good humans, swimming and backpacking.
A recurring nightmare I had when my children were first born was losing one of them under the surface of the water. Even now, thinking about that dream sends a shiver through my body. Knowing that over 4,000 people will live that reality in the US this year is infuriating. Why talk about #drowning on a professional networking site? Because the #healthcare leaders of today and tomorrow must embrace fostering and safeguarding health. Access to swim lessons, for both children and adults, is a critical life skill we can all promote. A great example is the Make a Splash Foundation, which provides free swim lessons to underprivileged children. Are there similar initiatives in your area? How can healthcare professionals support greater access to swim lessons and water safety? Let's work together to prevent these tragedies and promote safety for all. https://lnkd.in/gsN-R2M6

This global advocacy event serves as an opportunity to highlight the tragic and profound impact of drowning on families and communities and offer life-saving solutions to prevent it. An estimated 236,000 people drown every year, and drowning is among the ten leading causes of death for children aged 5-14 years. More than 90% of drowning deaths occur in rivers, lakes, wells, domestic water storage vessels and swimming pools in low- and middle-income countries, with children and adolescents in rural areas disproportionately affected.” (Source: WHO; https://lnkd.in/g3Q4KNb; accessed on 23 July 2024) CONSILIO ET OPERA supports the initiative of World Health Organization. #worlddrowningpreventionday #consilioetopera

A Public Service Announcement from Mother Goose… Never, ever let your children or grandchildren swim alone and unattended! From the Stop Drowning Now website, a thread entitled, “Facts & Stats About Drowning” @ https://lnkd.in/eyyJ_2iV Here’s a snippet… In the US, an average of 3,500 to 4,000 people drown per year. That is an average of 10 fatal drownings per day. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages 1-4. Drowning remains in the top 5 causes of unintentional injury-related death from birth to 5 years old. Twenty-three percent of child drownings happen during a family gathering near a pool. Drowning is the cause of death for most boating fatalities. It’s estimated that another 5 to 10 people receive hospital-related care for nonfatal drowning injuries for every fatal drowning victim. Children younger than one-year-old are more likely to drown at home. Eighty-seven percent of drowning fatalities happen in home pools or hot tubs for children younger than 5. Most take place in pools owned by family or friends. Children 5 to 17 years old are more likely to drown in natural water, such as ponds or lakes. #mothergoose #swimmingsafety

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝘀' 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀 In the chars, where the simple act of cooking weaves into the fabric of daily life, the ground-set wood-burning stoves tell a tale of warmth and risk. This environment, while fostering familial bonds over meals, also shadows a cautionary note for its youngest members, who play unaware of the dangers. Burn injuries are often a step away. Our narrative seeks to illuminate this issue, advocating for enhanced safety measures and awareness to safeguard the vibrancy of these communities. #CommunitySafety #FirePrevention #ChildSafety #AwarenessCampaign

Three months into our new strategic plan, and check! Progress being made. Like most strategic plans, the proof's in the pudding. Plans aren't made to sit on a shelf. I'm super proud of the OHS team, who's making sure that doesn't happen. One of the pillars of the new strategic plan is to provide more second changes for all animals - and our community was pretty specific: they're concerned about homeless cats. So, we need to find out more, to figure out how best to help. Ottawa connections - can you help? YOU ONLY NEED ONE MINUTE! To achieve our goal, we've launched a very quick survey about outdoor cats. Well over a thousand responses to date - but our goals are lofty - we want five thousand! Help me out and respond yourself, and share the link! I look forward to sharing the results, both with our community and to the humane sector! https://lnkd.in/dZQp_G_a
