Even the smallest act of kindness has a ripple effect that can lead to meaningful change for an individual or the transformation of an entire community, and I’ve been fortunate enough to see this first-hand. Today, on #GivingTuesday, people are coming together around the world to give back. Since its origins in 2012, GivingTuesday has generated a staggering $15 billion in day-of donations to U.S. non-profits alone. Globally, GivingTuesday has sparked even more in monetary contributions, volunteer hours, and community-led efforts.
GivingTuesday, which demonstrates how acts of generosity result in enormous, positive change globally, has long been a grantee of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. For this year’s #GivingTuesday global day of giving, we’re proud to highlight three inspiring GivingTuesday leaders from around the globe who saw opportunities to address their communities’ needs, creating ripples of generosity and impact that will benefit their communities for generations to come.
After winning a local government seat in her Bihar, India village of Tarari, Anjum Ara got involved with the Centre for Catalyzing Change (C3). This work inspired her to explore inequities within her community, and as a fellow through The Starling India Collective, she now works closely with local businesses to implement solutions for families lacking access to health education.
When she was just eight years old, Khloe Thompson founded Khloe Kares as a way to provide resources to unhoused women in her Los Angeles community. Nine years later, she’s the founder of GivingTuesday SPARK, a youth-led movement dedicated to encouraging kids to make a difference around the world.
Following the deaths of his mother, brother and aunt due to malaria, William Deng turned tragedy into action, creating Nyiroudit Health Clinic in his South Sudanese community to address the lack of healthcare facilities in rural communities. Today, he is the founder and CEO of Brother Deng, a nonprofit helping provide access to primary education, clean water and healthcare in South Sudan.
This is just the start of the stories for these three extraordinary people. I hope you’ll dig in further so you can be as inspired as I am by how they’re each bringing about change in and beyond their communities.
