I got this email today: "We are glad to inform you that your company has been shortlisted for “50 Best Companies to Watch 2024” by our news & research team." Did I jump with excitement? (Spoiler Alert: I did not)😃 This is the 6th consecutive year I received this. I think I have been shortlisted with 100 other companies. Awards and badges have been a part of my branding/marketing plan for a very long time. The ones within the logistics industry come around the same time every year and carry more credibility than these solicitations (This one was $2000). Kaleida Health recognized that they needed to optimize their purchased services contract categories and turned to Premier Inc.’s Conductiv® to reference their services pricing, develop processes to centralize this purchasing and avoid waste, and aggregate spend for best price contract negotiations. This ultimately drove $1.1 million in savings in 2023, and 15 initiatives have been identified for 2024, representing a spend of $64 million. Last week, we had an incredible Supplier Negotiation class led by the brilliant Priya K. Kumar. Here are my key takeaways from the class: 1. Timing is Everything: The best time to renegotiate is when your business is growing—leverage that momentum. If volumes are dropping, it may not be the right time. 2. Build Relationships, Not Just Contracts: Negotiations are with people, not just companies. Find common ground, keep an open dialogue, and always aim for a win-win. Offer value beyond the deal—think feedback or participating in quarterly reviews to foster strategic partnerships. 3. Capture the Value: Ensure the benefits you negotiate—whether risk mitigation, cost savings, logistics, or process improvements—are quantified and shared with your team.
