#VoteToTransformLives: Education To improve children and young people's experiences at school, we call for better supports that provide a link between the community and school. This quote from a young person we work with illustrates perfectly why this support is needed. #TransformingLives #CommunityEngagement #SchoolSupport #YouthEmpowerment #StudentSuccess 🏫 🧩

Doctor, Ed Leadership (EdLD) | Executive Director Of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Student Supports at OUSD | NL/TFA Alum | Educator & Learner | DEI Coach | Husband & Dad
Over the last few weeks, in preparation to open schools in OUSD and during our family outreach, our team has been exploring and defining our idea of Schools As Beloved Communities (Dr. MLK Jr., 1966). Like many districts, we’ve been fighting the good fight against chronic absenteeism, engagement challenges, the impact of social and social mobility challenges in schools, deficit narratives about students and families, and some of the public attacks on public schools over the last few years. And we keep going back to this notion that - albeit simple - people want to go where they belong. And so, how can we create and foster spaces of belonging, with high support and high expectations, where as many people as possible (students, staff, community) see themselves as part of a Beloved Community? We have some suggestions, in the visual below; what would you add? Emphasize? Explain differently? If you’re reading this, you’re likely part of the larger Beloved Community as well. 🫶🏼

#Education #Community Education is a wide concept. So it's important for parents, students and teachers to take care all together of it. In fact, school education isn't enough. It gives just perspectives to follow and the rest is satisfied by a general culture. 🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱🇲🇱

If you work in education, in any role, you'll be well aware of the deepening crisis around school attendance. It's a hot topic affecting all of us, including families at home and the numbers are increasingly concerning. So what can we actually do, realistically, in our own settings, to dismantle barriers to school attendance so that every child, in every setting, can thrive and fulfil their potential? Take a look at our latest think piece, People Not Numbers: Dismantling Barriers to School Attendance, where we explore: • factors behind rising levels of pupil absence • reframing the school attendance crisis • adopting a puzzle-solving mindset towards school attendance • what we mean by ‘family engagement’? • barriers to effective family engagement • family engagement as one way to address school attendance Download your free copy today ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/e68UJT6d #familyengagement #community #attendance

I'm particularly pleased to see our latest thought leadership piece being published today- because it feels hugely personal. One day, my child said, "I can't go to school today." That was the start of 9 months of part-time timetables, meetings with school, contact from local authority attendance officers, juggling home-schooling and a full-time job, and so much more. It's been a rough ride, but I'm so fortunate that my child's school has gone above and beyond to support us - weekly emails from his teacher sharing all the strategies they're putting in place, a pastoral team of support, starting school in the nurture room, reduced timetable, extra sensory breaks, allowing him to wear his own clothes and bring a toy in from home, and a big box of tissues ready and words of support during a few very emotional meetings. I really couldn't ask for more. This week we're celebrating. My son managed to go on a week-long residential trip, something that was unthinkable only a month ago. We're not out of the woods yet. We're bound to encounter more setbacks. But finally, there's a little glimmer of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. School non-attendance is a complex problem and there's no easy solution. I hope that this think piece will help give schools ways to see the child behind the attendance figures, and find ways to support them. Because every child deserves to feel safe and happy and have the right to learn. #EBSA #Attendance #Education
