The summer school will present methodologies for the co-creation of NBS, from stakeholder engagement and risk assessment to implementation and monitoring, and for evaluating their efficacy in present and future climate. The results are multidisciplinary and involve novel modelling strategies, laboratory measurements and targeted monitoring open-field campaigns where NBS are implemented. The school is a partner event of the EU Green Week. 💧 VIU hosted the PhD Academy on Water and Climate Resilience this week in San Servolo! With the leading professors from the University of Exeter, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich), KU Leuven and Tsinghua University and 24 students from all around the world! The students at the PhD Academy engaged in Masterclasses, Transversal Skills courses, and Workshops to expand their understanding of global challenges. The Academy focused on training the next generation of researchers to integrate methodologies and tools from various fields to develop solutions that enhance climate resilience. This is vital for addressing the increased frequency of extreme weather-related natural hazards caused by climate change, which has significant impacts on the environment and socio-economic activities worldwide. Six ambitious projects to sustain the ocean will receive over $700,000 in funding from 2024 Big Ideas for Oceans seed grants jointly awarded by the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and the Oceans Department at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability. Today (16 July 2024), we start with our pacific studies course OUR PACS 221 Semester 2 (2024) PACIFIC SUSTAINABILITY AND CLIMATE RESILIENCE This course examines ways in which community-based and indigenous innovation have been used to build up strategies of adaptation and resilience in oceanic communities, focusing on the Pacific. Deconstructing the deficit narratives characterising the Pacific Islands as inherently susceptible and reconceptualising the concepts of resilience and sustainability for socio-ecological justice is a key component of this course. Through thousands of years of navigation around the largest ocean on the planet and adapting to extreme weather systems such as cyclones and other climate change induced calamities, Pacific peoples have developed a high level of human innovation and resilience, which have formed their cultural strategies for survival. Community and indigenous knowledge relating to buildings, adaptive social organization, food security, farming, environmental restoration, coastal management will be explored. The critical issues of sustainability, resilience and adaptation to climate change and other natural and human created challenges in the Pacific. The Pacific islands are at the forefront of extreme whether patters and their impacts and the course examines the ways in which indigenous knowledge, humanities, science and technology can work together to respond to the expanding and deepening environmental and human impacts. Course Rationale: The course is interdisciplinary and links together different modes of knowledge, innovation and analysis which will enable students to have a deeper and broader understanding of sustainability in one of the largest geographical spaces and most culturally diverse area of the world—the Pacific. This course also provides students with an opportunity to discuss, analyse and critically engage with sustainability and climate resilience discourses, concepts, frameworks and narratives commonly used in academia, policy and the media. This course will connect with the cutting-edge Pacific Ocean and Climate Crisis Assessment (POCCA) research project will also contribute to connect the course with Pacific scholars from a variety of disciplines that would be contributing to the course as guest lecturers and speakers. The National Science Foundation announced the University of Utah along with six core academic partners will be part of a multi-institutional enterprise to confront the climate challenges facing the desert Southwest and spur economic development in the region. The effects of climate change are acutely evident in the American Southwest, from the desertification of Utah’s Great Salt Lake to the record-breaking extreme heat in Arizona and the dwindling supply of the Colorado River reaching Nevada. 🚨 Exciting News on Climate Research! 🚨   Today we celebrated, the funding of the EMBRACER research project by the NWO SUMMIT Grant, with all NIOZ colleagues.   Climate change can accelerate due to feedback mechanisms: complex phenomena caused by climate change that, in turn, further drive climate change. While research into long-term feedback mechanisms and modern climate change has been ongoing, the connection between these two has been underexplored - until now.   EMBRACER (Earth systeM feedBack ReseArch CEntRe), a globally unique center featuring leading climate experts, is set to change this. Funded by NWO with a 𝟑𝟎-𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐞𝐮𝐫𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭, EMBRACER will embark on a 𝟏𝟎-𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 to bridge the gap between short-term and long-term climate change predictions.   This consortium includes Utrecht University, the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Radboud University, and Wageningen University & Research. Within EMBRACER, 23 top Dutch researchers from diverse climate sciences — earth scientists, geochemists, oceanographers, climatologists, polar researchers, hydrologists, and ecologists — will collaborate. From NIOZ Gert-Jan Reichart (OCS department), Stefan Schouten (MMB department) and Ellen Hopmans (MMB department) are part of this world-class research collaboration.   The NIOZ team will focus on the interaction between oceans and the atmosphere and its impact on CO2 uptake in the ocean. News from University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons Future is not set in stone. It's a story we tell to understand what's to come. In the TranStat project, the FHGR is turning facts and statistics into narrative scenarios, envisioning potential trajectories and guiding transition pathways. Through collaborative workshops, we're fostering resilience in mountain resorts in the face of climate change by ·        considering long-term driving forces, ·        developing scenarios for each living lab, and ·        facilitating co-constructed transition processes. Together with mountain resorts we are considering the diverse needs of all stakeholders and working actively towards the future we desire. Middle school science covers the major branches of science. It's a bonus when you discover ways to help them connect the different branches. The recent publication on the effect of climate change and upwelling on megafauna in Nature https://lnkd.in/exxi9UXi has been summarized nicely in layman's terms in several publications including Newsweek, ResearchGate, and even Reddit! The connections between many branches of science can easily be grasped by students with a little guidance. If you are looking for current events to share, this might be the ticket for your classroom.

The range within this urban resilience PhD opportunity is impressive. For example, candidates can focus on: - investigating how interactions between urban communities and urban nature contribute to community resilience. This exploration may involve studying interactions between communities and urban green spaces, nature-based solutions such as urban forests, green roofs, and wetlands; or understanding how community perceptions of urban nature influence their ability to cope with and adapt to environmental challenges. Such explorations can shed light on how nature-based solutions enhance resilience and aid in responding to environmental hazards - investigating how community food networks interconnect with different city components through distribution or collaboration networks, and their interdependencies with the physical and natural environment. Research under this topic would help unravel the potential of community food networks to enhance city resilience against extreme climate events resulting in ‘food shocks’ - investigating the relationship between micro-level social structures, relationships and networks within a community and macro-level indicators of community resilience. This research will delve into how the intricate social fabric at the micro level contributes to the overall resilience of the community at a larger scale.

As of this week, I’ve started my Master of Applied Science at University of Otago. This next year, I aim to further my interest and capabilities pertaining to climate change mitigation, and I hope to pursue a small-scale research project within this topic.
