Instead of throwing as many keywords as possible into a page, consider the primary keyword as the topic of a book, while secondary keywords become the subtopics. Here’s what forms part of our strategy:

Want Google to find your website? Imagine Google is a giant library, overflowing with books. You want your website to be on the shiny new shelf, not stuck in the dusty basement. So, how do librarians (or should we say, Google bots) find your website? 1. They crawl the web like little bookworms, finding all the pages. 2. Then, they shelve your website based on its content, like sorting fiction from history books. 3. Finally, to see if your website deserves a prime spot, they check its reputation. Do other important websites link to yours? Kind of like how famous authors get their books displayed prominently. The more relevant, credible, and well-linked your website is, the higher it ranks in search results! Have any questions about SEO? Being a #marketing-savvy author, you probably know that optimizing your book’s metadata is one of the best ways to increase your sales. But what exactly is metadata? Simply put, a book’s metadata are the keywords/terms/info filters that web browsers use to find your book. Things like: 🌟 Your book’s title and subtitle 🌟 Your name 🌟 Your book’s description/taglines 🌟 Your book’s genre/category 🌟 The ISBN 🌟 The list price 🌟 And just about any other keyword that a reader might use to find your book (a tagline? a hashtag, maybe? a linked website?) Now comes the tricky question: How in the world are you supposed to “optimize” the metadata? Here’s the quick how-to: 1. Choose a strong set of keywords for your title, description, category or genre, and additional discovery terms. 2. Use the same set of keywords across all your platforms. Be consistent. Metadata optimization is, essentially, an #SEO-optimization process. If you’re familiar with SEO, you’ll know that choosing relevant keywords is the key to successful optimization. Take your time when selecting your keywords. Analyze books within your category/niche. What keywords are they using? Could you benefit from using them too? Resist the temptation to choose whatever comes first to your mind. Have you ever optimized your metadata? How did that go? #bookcoach #nonfictionbooks #bookmarketing #bookpublishing #bookdesign

In my role as an editor I don't write articles on SEJ very often, but I do write a ton of ebook content. Last year we released a new Ranking Factors ebook edition and oh hey look it's already getting out of date! Yaaaay! So I cleaned up my introduction to the book, added some new information and clarification, and posted it as an article while we work on the next version of Ranking Factors for this year (yaaaaay). Anyway I hope you like this rundown of what's been happening over the last few months and my take on user signals/click data in search. #seo #rankingfactors
