In this context, BFF does not stand for "best friend forever." Instead, it is actually short for "business-first focus." Here's the reason, as Henry put it: "Although we provide IT consulting and solutions, we always put business first. The first step is always understanding the client’s business objectives and problems. Then, the second step is knowing what technology we can use to leverage business objectives or solve business problems." “Put it in Te Papa” has become an aspirational aim for New Zealand culture, science and innovation. Today, let’s meet one of our great innovators who, in fact, got something put in Te Papa. John Britten built what is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever motorbikes, and he did it completely from scratch. Instead of starting with every other motorbike out there and trying to improve them, Britten started from “first principles” and rethought key elements from the ground up. His greatest innovation was building a frameless bike – instead of a heavy steel frame, the engine became the integral part of the chassis, with suspension components attached. (Apologies for the poor motorbike knowledge…Tim Warren might be able to help!) Possible because he was building his own engines, Britten’s V1000 bike set several world speed records and is widely regarded as one of the greatest bikes ever. And it was all achieved in a garage in Christchurch. Sadly, Britten passed away in 1995 from inoperable cancer, but his legacy as one of our finest innovators lived on. The Britten Motorcycle Company built 10 V1000s. It’s hard to say what they might have achieved if not for Britten’s untimely passing. Now, it’s another New Zealand tale of amazing innovation with lost commercial potential. Imagine what Britten’s legacy could have been if we had a culture of commercializing the wonderful work our innovators do.
