Maintaining feed pipe systems in existing exposed sites is already challenging with maintenance and repair costs increased in more exposed sites, not to mention the high costs of interruptions to feeding. The team led by Rowan Paton: Advanced Composite Structures Australia | ACS-A along with Griffith University, Pacific ESI, Tassal Group and University of Tasmania aimed to better understand the dynamics of feed pipes systems, and to develop solutions to make aspects of the system more robust. Being able to reliably and economically operate salmon farms in more exposed waters will be a considerable advantage for the Tasmanian salmon industry. NEW method and equipment for deep soil water sampling Soil water sampling deeper than approximately 5 m below surface has so far been a relatively time-consuming and costly method. DMR has therefore developed a new DualTube method with an associated automated sampler, making deep soil water sampling significantly easier and cheaper. The installation itself has been adapted for efficient installation with Geoprobe (with great assistance from NIRAS by @Lars Prinds Hedegaard), resulting in effective installation without the need for subsequent handling of excess soil. The method is particularly suitable for contamination investigations focusing on PFAS and pesticides. The project has been carried out in collaboration with and funded by the Environmental Protection Agency's Technology Development Fund, Region Midtjylland, and Region Nordjylland.
