The Biden administration has approved the ninth offshore wind farm for the US as the country aims to hit its target of 30GW by 2030. The target is unlikely to be hit, with less than half of the amount (13GW) so far approved, but the U.S. Department of the Interior is calling the approval ‘yet another step forward’ towards the goal. The Atlantic Shores South offshore wind energy project will consist of two facilities, projects 1 and 2, in total estimated to have a power generation capacity of 2.8GW. It will be installed about nine miles off the coast of New Jersey and will comprise up to 200 wind turbines and up to 10 offshore substations. “The Biden-Harris administration is building momentum every day for our clean energy future, and today’s milestone is yet another step toward our ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore energy by 2030,” said secretary Deb Haaland. “Our clean energy future is now a reality.” Keep up to date with the latest industry news on Maritime Journal; https://lnkd.in/deMJwrV9

Recent statistics reveal that Europe installed new wind power facilities with a capacity of 18.3 GW last year. Almost 80% (79%) of this energy came from onshore wind. Although offshore wind is also growing, experts say that onshore will continue to have a bigger installation share in the next 6 years. At the end of March, the Biden Administration announced the final approval of the Sunrise Offshore Wind Project. The recent approval follows the Biden Administration’s decision to utilize fewer wind turbines, originally outlined in the proposal, to overall reduce environmental impacts from the wind farm. The proposed Sunrise Offshore Wind Project consists of a partnership between Orsted and Eversource and will be located 30 miles east of Long Island, or 16 nautical miles off Martha’s Vineyard. The offshore wind farm is projected to consist of a capacity of about 924 megawatts and generate electricity for over 320,000 New York homes. The Sunrise Offshore Wind Project is the seventh project approved under the Biden Administration. Not only will the project assist the Biden Administration in their goal to increase the production of offshore wind energy, but the project will further promote economic benefits in the surrounding states by creating 800 jobs for construction and 300 jobs for operation efforts. #OffshoreWind #WindEnergy #RenewableEnergy #ElectricPower #SunriseOffshoreWind #Orsted #Eversource #NewYork #MAPSearch #ENvision

Shows a gap between political ambitions and the ability of the market to deliver. Offshore Wind - What now? See www.highwind.no World's largest offshore wind developer Orsted cuts back production targets as costs mount The world's largest offshore wind developer has scaled back development targets and announced hundreds of job cuts as the renewable industry struggles under the pressure of rising costs. In common with the industry more broadly, Orsted has been hit by high inflation, raised interest rates, project delays and supply chain difficulties in recent years. Up to 800 jobs are to go as the company - which owns a big chunk of the UK offshore wind energy capacity - pulls out of the Spanish, Portuguese and Norwegian wind markets.

This July, the Department of Interior (DOI) announced the approval of New Jersey’s proposed Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind South Project. The Atlantic Shores South project is devised of two offshore wind projects, Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind 1 and 2. Together, the offshore wind project will generate approximately 2,800 megawatts of electricity with the ability to generate electricity for roughly 1 million homes. The installation of the offshore wind farm is expected to consist of 200 wind turbines and 10 offshore substations. The location of the offshore wind farm is projected to be set about 9 miles off the New Jersey coast, between Atlantic City and Long Beach Island. The Atlantic Shores South project is the first offshore wind project approved for the state of New Jersey and is the ninth offshore wind project approved by the DOI. The following approval overall supports the Biden’s Administration’s goal to develop and install 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy by 2030. #WindEnergy #OffshoreWind #RenewableEnergy #ElectricPower #NewJersey #AtlanticShores #DOI #CleanEnergy #MAPSearch #ENvision

📈🌊 The offshore wind energy industry in the U.S. is rapidly advancing, despite being overshadowed by election discussions. Stretching beyond coastlines into the heartlands, it brings $33 billion in investments, economic development, and thousands of jobs. With four commercial-scale projects underway—Ørsted’s Revolution Wind and Sunrise Wind, Dominion’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), and Vineyard Wind 1 - the sector will add 5 GW of clean energy to power over 1.75 million homes. 🏗️🌍 These projects highlight the expanding supply chain, spanning 37 states and attracting $23 billion in investments and 3,700 jobs, with an additional 9 GW approved for construction, aiding in bolstering market confidence. States like New York, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware are driving demand for offshore wind power, finalizing contracts, opening new offtake award rounds, and passing legislation to expand goals and ease transmission constraints.
