Qualcomm Considers Intel Acquisition as Chipmaker Faces Decline
In recent days, Qualcomm (QCOM.O) has approached Intel (INTC.O) to discuss a potential acquisition, according to sources familiar with the matter on Friday, 21 September 2024. The talks, still in their infancy, could result in a transformative deal within the semiconductor industry, though significant regulatory hurdles are expected.
Qualcomm has shown particular interest in acquiring portions of Intel's business, notably its PC design division, as it evaluates the broader range of Intel's operations. While no official bid has been made yet, Qualcomm is reportedly exploring the viability of such a move, another source added.
The news saw Intel's shares rise by 3.3%, while Qualcomm's stock dipped by 2.9%.
Intel, once the industry’s leading chipmaker, has experienced a dramatic fall from grace, with its stock value plummeting by nearly 60% since the beginning of the year. The approach from Qualcomm comes at a critical time for Intel, as it navigates a period of financial instability.
Should the acquisition advance, it would face intense scrutiny from antitrust regulators in the U.S., China, and Europe. Qualcomm may be required to divest some of Intel’s business units to gain approval from competition authorities.
If successful, the deal would be one of the most significant in the tech sector since Broadcom's unsuccessful $142 billion takeover attempt of Qualcomm in 2018, which was blocked by then-President Trump over national security concerns.
