HONORARY DISTINCTIONS In my humble opinion, honorary doctorates should be referred to as honorary distinctions! If you have received an honorary doctorate, it means that your professional title is NOT Dr. This means that society should not address you as Dr. Dr does not go on your resume nor does it hold any weight in academic circles or professional work environments; meaning that it does not increase your salary range or ascent in the workforce hierarchy. Honorary doctorates do not have their work published nor can you find any profiles in any exclusive, invite-only database(s) with their critically-acclaimed merits. Real doctorates are invited to global events, are invited to give keynote addresses, and online lectures to students. Real doctorates are invited to submit new papers, journals, and books. Real academic doctorate degrees cannot be taken from you, as seen below... Can we please put some respect on those who have been accepted into and who have successfully defended their dissertation, earning the rightful letters after their names and properly addressed with their rightful title as Dr... If honorary doctorates continue to refer to themselves as doctor [especially celebrities without any academic degree(s)], then I will continue to overemphasize calling real doctorate recipients "doctor" and absolutely no one else!
Howard University’s Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to revoke the honorary degree given to Sean “Diddy” Combs in 2014, saying he is “no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor.” The university will also return Combs’ $1 million contribution and terminate a $1 million pledge agreement from the Sean Combs Foundation, the Board said in a statement Friday. “Mr. Combs’ behavior as captured in a recently released video is so fundamentally incompatible with Howard University’s core values and beliefs that he is deemed no longer worthy to hold the institution’s highest honor,” the Board said in the statement.

Wake Up Everybody “I am utterly disgusted by University of Florida decision and the precedent that it sets. Without the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion department, the job falls to the Office of the Provost, who already has their hands full, to raise money for the university and continue to advance the academic studies and athletic programs. We cannot continue to believe and trust that a team of leaders all made up of the same background will make the right decision when it comes to equality and diversity. History has already proven that is not the case. Instead of showing courage and leadership, we continue to fail based on systemic issues and with this decision, UFlorida has conformed to the political pressures of today’s time, To the MANY, minority athletes at UF, please be aware and vocal about the decision by the University who is now closing the doors on other minorities without any oversight. And to those who think it’s not your problem and stay on the side lines and say nothing, you are complicit in supporting systemic issues.” -Emmit Smith, former NFL player Pro Football Hall of Fame In 2023, the Florida football program made $93,206,919 in total revenue and paid out $60,894,176 in expenses. The program raked in a net profit of $32,312,743 for the university. 32 million dollars. Diversity, equity and inclusion are the ONLY reasons Florida athletics is able to compete in the Southeastern Conference. The ONLY reason. In a related (fantastic) story, what if all 67 Black players on the 2024 Florida football roster decided to leverage the transfer portal for playing opportunities at Florida A&M, Alabama A&M, Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Howard, Southern and Grambling Universities. ‘Day of Absence’ wants to be reality.

Curious about the big topics in the North Carolina Community College System this year? The article below gives a great overview! ⬇️ #educate #inspire #support #yourcommunityyourcollege
North Carolina's community colleges are facing a pivotal year in 2024. I have spent the past three months producing a landscape analysis I hope you will take the time to read. One key development will be the potential implementation of Propel NC, a new funding formula that could significantly impact the allocation of resources across the system. Additionally, the introduction of a three-year graduation plan and the mass expansion of Opportunity Scholarships may influence dual enrollment programs. Throughout the year, we will closely monitor these issues and their impact on the community college system in North Carolina. Stay tuned! https://lnkd.in/eSqz2hGD

Huston-Tillotson University (HT) recently unveiled its strategic plan for the next decade. Approved by the HT Board of Trustees, the plan, titled “From First to Foremost: Huston-Tillotson University 2024-2034,” is the culmination of an inclusive process that spanned several months and included the gathering of input from representatives of several key stakeholder groups, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, community and business leaders and local elected officials. “Our 10-year plan establishes a clear, long-term vision for HT,” said Melva K. Wallace, who is completing her second year as the university’s 7th president. “It is the blueprint that we will use during the next ten years to solidify our position not only as a premier historically Black university, but as a top institution of higher education in the state of Texas. It sets a focused direction for the 149-year old institution by reinforcing its commitment to Austin and all of the communities it serves, implementing strategic initiatives that reflects HT’s strengths, and underscoring its mission to provide excellent educational opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds, and becoming a major contributor to Austin’s workforce demands and the Texas marketplace.” Click the link below to read more to to access the strategic plan. https://lnkd.in/gVPAJmm3 #HTYou #FromFirstToForemost

The conclusion of Ben Sasse’s powerful essay in The Atlantic about the past, present, and future of higher education: “To keep America’s universities the envy of the world, we need to make our institutions welcoming homes for those who are passionate about the glorious mission of education and the communities of free thought it requires. If you entered academia because you share that joy, find institutions that are serious about renewing higher education and are serious about stewarding this incredible calling. Those of us—left, right, or center—who value human dignity, pluralism, and genuine progress and who want to make sure that we pass these blessings to the next generation cannot abandon institutions to post-liberals on the left who would destroy them from within or post-liberals on the right who would tear them to the ground. At our best, the academy promotes human flourishing in ways that no other sector can. If we commit ourselves to the work of creating, discovering, and serving—not enforcing impersonal hierarchies of power or stifling inquiry—we’ll rebuild public trust. “Those of us called to higher education—members of boards, presidents, administrators, professors, and donors—owe it to future generations to build something better.” Link in the comments.

Chair of the Department of History, & Samuel Clark Waugh Distinguished Professor of International Relations at UNL. Owner of Fox Hollow Films, LLC.
The Flagship has to drive this conversation. Anything less won’t work, and Academics has to be prioritized. Bring back the university seal trapped in the system office, drop the N, and lead with research and teaching excellence. Ask the faculty who have been here how to set us on the right path. This starts by focusing on the R1 faculty.
Great work by Henry Cordes and the Omaha World-Herald. It’s time for a candid conversation with Nebraskans about what they want to see from their University in the future. We have all the potential to compete at the highest levels academically AND athletically, but it will require bold and courageous choices about our priorities. When our University sets a high bar for excellence, all of Nebraska will benefit. https://lnkd.in/gKNDmUcu
