▶ Such powerful research with wide-ranging implications for life, learning and career. ▶ From the HBR article by Martin Seligman: "In the late 1960s I was part of the team that discovered “learned helplessness.” We found that dogs, rats, mice, and even cockroaches that experienced mildly painful shock over which they had no control would eventually just accept it, with no attempt to escape. It was next shown that human beings do the same thing." ▶ For those creating the learning conditions for children and youth, there must be a recognition that some students may need to borrow an adult's 'optimism' about their circumstance, their adversities, and even about themselves before practicing 'learned optimism.' The choppy seas of adversity, trauma, grief and loss can swamp even the most buoyant of individuals. But as Seligman suggests, we can focus on the external waves and our beliefs about what they might do to us, or use our strengths to break through them. "A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor." - Franklin D. Roosevelt Thankful for those in the education sector serving in so many ways to increase the buoyancy and resilience of their students, their colleagues, and themselves.

“Strangely, however, about a third of the animals and people who experience inescapable shocks or noise never become helpless. What is it about them that makes this so? Over 15 years of study, my colleagues and I discovered that the answer is optimism. We developed questionnaires and analyzed the content of verbatim speech and writing to assess “explanatory style” as optimistic or pessimistic. We discovered that people who don’t give up have a habit of interpreting setbacks as temporary, local, and changeable. (“It’s going away quickly; it’s just this one situation, and I can do something about it.”) That suggested how we might immunize people against learned helplessness, against depression and anxiety, and against giving up after failure: by teaching them to think like optimists.” ~ From HBR’s Building Resilience

As humans, we tend to avoid experiencing unforgettable emotions and situations. It makes sense as to why denial is used so often, often enough to become a harmful coping mechanism.
