Do you know your dog's blood group? The DEA (dog erythrocyte antigen) system in dogs is used to identify your dogs blood group. An erythrocyte is a red blood cell. Dogs have close to 13 blood groups identified, The common among them are DEA-1.1, DEA-1.2, DEA-3, DEA-4, DEA-5, and DEA-7. Similar to human there is also postive and negative The majority of dogs are DEA 1.1 positive and may only give blood safely to other DEA 1.1. positive dogs. If the wrong blood group transfusion is given, it can result in both clumping and destruction of the red blood cells. Some breeds are mostly one blood group. DEA 1.1 positive - Golden retrievers and Labradors DEA 1.1 negative - Greyhounds, Boxers, Irish wolfhounds, German shepherds, Dobermans, and Pit bulls There are blood banks for Animals too, similar to humans A standard unit of whole canine blood is 500cc, or almost 17 ounces Similar to humans the correct blood type is provided to the dog undergoing treatment.. for which they would required donors to donate at blood banks. If you would like to know your dog's blood type, request your veterinarian who has easy-to-use canine typing card to screen for blood types.
