We are pleased to see that almost 70% of sign-ups for the Mental Health Commission IRL's National Quality Framework toolkit have come from community-based mental health services. Since 2008, our members have worked together to share knowledge on best-practice and standards in therapy in community-based settings. Our members have developed their own unique collaborative space to share learnings and experience with colleagues from across Ireland. To further advance this work, last year Community Therapy Ireland commissioned a study focussing on the development of clinical standards and increased capacity of community-based therapy in Ireland. We did this in consultation with our members and the wider sector. An extensive literature review process was undertaken to identify best practice internationally and nationally. Based on the findings, recommendations proposed a roadmap for best practice across community-based therapeutic services, to ensure the best possible quality of engagement and outcomes for service users. Working collaboratively, ensuring a co-ordinated approach and developing communities of best-practice is central in the adoption of the clinical governance framework proposed in the study. To achieve best-practice, it is crucial that Tusla and HSE invest in harnessing and mobilising the knowledge base and expertise that currently exists within our membership and the sector. The level of interest in MHC's Framework further demonstrates the sector's hunger to continuously improve. The Mental Health Commission Framework for Quality aligns well with the field of professional practice in which community-based counselling and psychotherapy services operate. The findings from our study point to the role of quality management systems to work towards excellence, through a process of critical reflection continuous improvement. Community Therapy Ireland members echoed this need for connecting the role of continuous quality improvement for the development of evidence-based best practice and standards for community-based therapeutic service delivery.
