It sometimes feels like you could spend years of your life reading about leadership without ever learning much about how leadership actually works in practice—and more importantly, what it looks like when it's working. So: transformative leadership. What does it really mean? Having been on both sides of the arrangement—nobody becomes a leader without first being led—I've developed some ideas. The first thing I'll say is that the term is something of a misnomer. Leadership inevitably implies an unequal arrangement: the leader leads, their employees follow. Whereas in my experience, leaders serve an essential maintenance function. Their job is to take a bird's-eye view of the larger operation and to handle its component parts with care—to suss out and eliminate obstructions, to promote an overall atmosphere of thoughtfulness and creativity. The goal is to empower each employee to do their best work, unhindered by the kinds of needless obstacles that so often stunt both personal and organizational growth. Working day after day without any clear sense of whether your work matters can be intensely demoralizing. A good leader knows that every member of a team is essential to its overall functioning, and drives that point home regularly. In my experience, that kind of psychological security is a prerequisite for the big mental leaps that drive innovation. If you're always looking over your shoulder, worried that the hammer is about to come down, you're unlikely to take big swings.
