What counts as "Experience" in the field of architecture is so far off from what counts as "Experience" in any other industry. I was told recently that I didn't have over 5 years of experience in the business of providing architectural services because my company is 4 years old. I responded with, well, how do you count the 16+ years I spent in this industry before I started my office in every role up from Draftsman through Project Manager? Only in the field of architecture does somebody with 20+ years of experience get told 'you don't have enough experience for my projects / contract' or your experience is not specific enough to the type of project this is. There is a fallacy about our services that architects are more specialists rather than true generalists. This is by in large, not true. Every project comes through with certain things that will need to get considered on an individual basis and some few things that can be repeated from previous projects. Every project will come through with its own client needs, budget, scope of work, idea, direction, code requirements (these change every 3 years anyway), jurisdictional requirements (this city does x, this neighborhood does y, this shoreline requires z...), and more. Every time we go through all of these items and find the best solution that weaves the needle through them all. How then should a client evaluate an architect's experience? I would say, you review how many years total they have been in the profession, the breadth and depth of that experience (has it been at 1 company, has it been only in 1 role or 1 stage of a project) and evaluate what their knowledge base is and how well you trust them and work together. Those are the key ingredients for a successful project with a good client.

Senior Associate Director at ACRWORLD - Structural, Civil & Building Services Engineering | Business Support | Transportation | Defence
✋ A question for the Structural Consulting Engineering community... I come across a high volume of candidates who have gained experience working on low-rise projects looking to step up to medium to high-rise projects. The projects that they have worked on are typically, Residential, Commercial and Industrial and they will often be taking the lead in design, running multiple projects at once, consulting with Architects, Builders, Clients etc., taking a project from concept to completion. Most companies that have a hiring requirement for mid to high-rise buildings want to hire in a like for like capacity, so these candidates struggle to be considered for the companies designing larger projects. It's the classic which came first scenario, the chicken or the egg. My question is: ◾ What outside of project experience would make these candidates more desirable from a hiring perspective? ◾ What could they be doing to boost their profile for this project typology? ◾ How do they stand out from the crowd? Any thoughts would be gratefully received... #structuralengineering #highrisebuildings #recruitment #structuraldesign

There is a unique sense of reward in the construction field to see a project come to life. As an Engineer, translating ideas from paper to reality is truly fascinating. Collaborating with consultants and contractors to bring these visions to fruition is the most fulfilling aspect of the job. #Construction #Engineering #Teamwork #Design
