Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a rare genetic disorder that affects the motor neurons in the spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and progressive loss of movement. In an effort to raise awareness and support individuals and families affected by this condition, August is designated as SMA Awareness Month. While there is no cure for SMA at the moment, here are some recommended treatment approaches available: ⭐️Medication: To improve muscle and nerve function ⭐️Braces, Support Devices & Wheelchairs: To help patients maintain their independence ⭐️Rehabilitation: In addition to therapy to keep joints flexible, specific therapies for speech, chewing and swallowing may be appropriate ⭐️Ventilation Assistance: Patients with breathing difficulties may require non-invasive ventilation to prevent apnea while sleeping You may visit this page to learn more about SMA: https://buff.ly/3M6LXGh #BMEC #biomedicalengineering #SpinalMuscularAtrophy #SMA #GeneticDisorder #SpinalCord #MotorNeuron #Rehabilitation #Physiotherapy #OccupationalTherapy

Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) is one of nine types of muscular dystrophies, a group of genetic, degenerative diseases primarily affecting voluntary muscles. A multidisciplinary team of specialists with experience in treating Becker muscular dystrophy can help address symptoms: Physical rehabilitation professionals can design exercise programs and teach stretching activities to minimize contractures, which are hardened or deformed joints caused by contracting muscles and tendons. Our Patient came 4 months back with Poor coordination and muscular imbalance, has low stamina, He abruptly fall down..All these problems are resolving gradually with an overall improvement in his health. #musculardystrophy #beckermusculardystrophy #physiotherapy #physiotherapist

Degenerative Lumbar Spinal Stenosis ; The key to correctly diagnosis DLSS is to recognize the classic Neurogenic Claudication History. Patients with NC classically complain of Pain , Weakness , Numbness , Tingling or Cramping in One or Both Legs. These Symptoms occur with Walking Or Standing. Sitting or Leaning Forward allviates atleast some of the symptoms. However , MRI are needed to confirm Neural Element Compression.

Multiple Sclerosis(MS). A disabling disease of the central nervous system (CNS), which affects both the brain and the spinal cord.(Consequences of immune system attack on nerve fibres). Studies have shown that patients with MS are prone to develop ocular diseases like ophthalmoplegia, optic neuritis, choroidal folds, etc. However progression of MS differs in individuals. See pictures below 👇 Understanding the importance of detailed basic ocular test like cover test, motility test and dilated funduscopy may be appropriate for effective ocular prognosis and management. What is Chronic Subdural Hematoma (CSDH)? Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a medical condition that occurs when blood accumulates between the brain and the outermost layer of the brain, known as the dura mater. This condition is more common in older adults but can also occur in younger individuals. https://lnkd.in/gmbZJs_T #ChronicSubduralHematoma #CSDH #neurologicalcondition #bleedingonthebrain #headinjury #olderadults #medicalemergency #treatmentneeded #awareness #education #braintumor #stroke #headache #confusion #memoryloss #weakness #seizures

Spinal muscular atrophy (#SMA) causes the degeneration of motor neurons in the spinal cord. Treatments including nusinersen, risdiplam, and onasemnogene abeparvovec have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms, with recent studies suggesting greater effectiveness when treatment is initiated in the presymptomatic stage. Cooper & colleagues synthesize findings from prospective studies of presymptomatic treatment for 5q SMA published up to December 2023: Systematic Review of Presymptomatic Treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy https://lnkd.in/dBrgy7FM

The answer to yesterday’s #ClinicalChallenge question is: B. After optimization of kidney replacement therapy, nonpharmacologic therapy (e.g., cognitive-behavior therapy for insomnia) is the treatment of choice for insomnia. The use of hypnotic medications has been associated with an increased risk of fall-related fractures, mortality, and other adverse effects in patients with end-stage kidney disease. However, patients with severe insomnia who do not respond to nonpharmacologic therapies may be treated with short-term medical therapy, provided they are followed closely during treatment. Because traumatic brain injury, concussion and other forms of head trauma cause biochemical changes associated with numerous symptoms that follow, researchers using animal models have discovered that the neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory qualities of CBD may be helpful in post-injury treatment. Specifically, CBD interacts within and outside of the endocannabinoid system affecting or cross-talking with various cannabinoid receptors, vanilloid receptor 1, 5-hydroxytryptamine, and adenosine receptors. In a thought-provoking Op-Ed, Julian Bailes highlights the critical need for early diagnosis in the battle against trauma-related neurodegeneration. Just as in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease, individuals affected by Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) require interventions that can halt or slow down the relentless neurological deterioration. Sadly, today's medical field lacks an FDA-approved method for pinpointing brain changes due to past traumatic injuries — a necessary step for effective treatment against the loss of brain function, worsening neurological symptoms and the profound personal and economic impacts these conditions bring. At CereMark Pharma, our team is dedicated to changing this reality. We're at the forefront, working to develop novel diagnostics that enable medical professionals to manage the course of disease progression. You can learn more about why this work is so important in the Op-Ed by Dr. Bailes: https://lnkd.in/gU6dXWMn #BrainHealth #CTE #Neurodegeneration #Innovation #CereMarkPharma

A new pilot study found that high-intensity exercise induces brain-protective effects that have the potential to not just slow down, but possibly reverse, the neurodegeneration associated with Parkinson’s disease. “The medications we have available are only for symptomatic treatment. They do not change the disease course. But exercise seems to go one step beyond and protect the brain at the neuronal level,” says Sule Tinaz, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Yale School of Medicine and co-principal investigator.
