🔙 Throwback to the Rise and Fall of the BMW i3 ⚡ Recently stumbled upon "From the CW Archives: The life and death of the BMW i3" penned by Jeff Sloan (CompositesWorld), and it struck a chord. The BMW i3, an electric vehicle (EV) ahead of its time, emerged in the mid-2000s with a 100-mile range, urban-centric design, and innovative use of composites. During this era, I was privileged to witness firsthand the collaboration between my former employer, SGL Carbon, and BMW Group in pioneering industrial feats. Under the leadership of Andreas Wuellner, the BMW/SGL joint venture spearheaded the entire supply chain of composite materials crucial for the i3's construction. From PAN precursor in Japan to carbon fiber manufacturing in the U.S., and weaving, RTM, and subassembly in Germany, this venture epitomized innovation and cross-border cooperation. Fast forward to July 2022, marking the end of the i3's nine-year journey as BMW bid farewell to its pioneering EV. With its demise came the dismantling of the elaborate carbon fiber supply chain, signaling the closure of a remarkable chapter in automotive composite manufacturing. Reflecting on Jeff's assertion, "This is not to say that composites don’t have a place in automotive manufacturing — but it may be an evolution, not a revolution," sparks a crucial debate on the future of automotive materials. COLLABORATION: Zenvo Automotive A/S and Aerotak collaborate to optimize #Aurora aero-architecture Danish supercar manufacturer #Zenvo Automotive has developed the new Zenvo Aurora around the concept of an 'equilibrium of extremes', which balances various attributes without compromising on any single aspect. A key element of this process was ensuring that the styling was both aggressive and elegant while maintaining excellent handling and driving engagement. Zenvo partnered with Danish aerodynamic expert #Aerotak, which previously contributed to the TS1 GT, TSR and TSR-S programs. Aerotak used computational fluid dynamics (#CFD) to simulate air flow and optimize the aero-architecture for the Aurora #Agil and #Tur models. Kasper Berthu Damkjær, founder and senior fluid mechanics specialist at Aerotak, praised the collaboration: "Working with Zenvo’s design team has been highly motivating. Their desire to understand our process and integrate our feedback has been key in delivering the best possible performance for the Aurora project." Christian Brandt, design director for Zenvo Automotive, highlighted the challenging but rewarding design process for the Aurora models. He emphasized the importance of balancing beauty and #aerodynamics, particularly for the high downforce, track-biased Agil variant.
