EWEC has issued a Request for Proposals for the development of the Madinat Zayed Independent Power Producer project, a new Open-Cycle Gas Turbine plant located in the Madinat Zayed area, approximately 120 kilometres southwest of Abu Dhabi City. As EWEC leads the UAE's shift towards renewable and clean energy, flexible, gas-fired plants like Madinat Zayed are key to ensuring a reliable energy supply while the country transitions to a decarbonised water and electricity system. These types of plants will be particularly important for supporting the growth of solar power, providing crucial flexibility during peak power demand periods and acting as a bridge to a future powered exclusively by clean and renewable sources. Othman Al Ali, Chief Executive Officer of EWEC, said: “EWEC is accelerating the UAE’s energy transition, in line with our strategic mission to be a leader of change within the energy sector. Commissioning the development of flexible, gas-fired plants will enable us to incorporate renewable energy sources such as solar PV and wind into the nation’s sustainable energy mix even more rapidly. Natural gas has an important, transitional role to play in securing our system while we work towards a more sustainable future. As we move forward with the Madinat Zayed project, we look forward to receiving proposals from qualified companies and consortiums.” #EnergyTransition #TodayForTomorrow

The UAE on Tuesday launched what it called the “world’s first” facility that can provide renewable energy at scale around the clock. Abu Dhabi clean energy company Masdar will combine 5 gigawatts of solar capacity with 19 gigawatt hours of battery storage to produce 1 gigawatt of “uninterrupted clean power”, Dr Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and chairman of Masdar, said at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The project is being carried out in partnership with the Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec). “For decades, the biggest barrier facing renewable energy has been intermittency,” Dr Al Jaber said. “It has been the moon shot challenge of our time. How can we power a world that never sleeps with energy sources that do? How can we transform renewable resources into reliable power? “This will, for the first time ever, transform renewable energy into baseload energy. It is a first step that could become a giant leap.” “Battery storage is the fastest growing energy technology in the world today. A record 100GW of storage will be added to the grid this year. Yet, this represents a tiny fraction of the overall power demand that is being driven by the megatrends, and especially the surge in AI,” he said. Dr Al Jaber said it was vital that there remains a diversity of energy options to ensure global access. “No single source of energy can meet this unprecedented demand,” he said. “Policies and regulations that prematurely reduce those options are just self-defeating. Simply put, we need an and-and approach.” #uae #solarenergy #photovoltaics #pv #energystorage #ewec #ai #artificialintelligence #baseload #intermittency #renewableenergy

The UAE, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050, is set to launch additional large-scale solar projects to meet growing clean energy demand. Energy Minister Suhail Al Mazrouei announced plans to develop “one or two” solar farms annually until 2030, similar to those in Abu Dhabi. The country targets 30% of its energy from clean sources by 2030, with a goal of generating 15 gigawatts of renewable energy. Last year, Abu Dhabi launched the Al Dhafra solar power plant, one of the world’s largest, which supplies power to 200,000 homes. The UAE also focuses on sustainable aviation fuel, green hydrogen, and AI-driven electricity demand. #UAECleanEnergy #SolarPower #RenewableEnergy #UAE2030 #NetZero #CleanEnergyFuture
