This past year I was unable to attain a corporate internship for the summer. Being surrounded by peers who had a successful recruiting season felt depressing at times, but I believe there is an upside to every downside!
This summer is "Year of Improvement: Summer Edition", an extension of the new year's resolution list I made in January. Aside from working on projects as a summer program assistant with the CMU CES team, here are some things I am working on in my down time:
1) Learning how to code with Python 💻✨
This will become the second programming language I know, but the first I attempt learn completely during my personal time. I'm very grateful for the python community online for providing resources, and my own friend Natalie G. for answering my long list questions as I learn.
I hope that by the end of the summer I am able to begin a project that could put my skills to the test.
2) Expand on my semester long research project 📃🖋📊
Last year I had the pleasure to work on a research project detailing strategies to cool NYC’s low income communities, an important subject with deep personal ties. At the time I had to work with a very limited dataset I collected from surveys to peers.
This summer I am hoping to put my R skills to analyze city data, in hopes of increasing the impact of my research.
3) Doing Mock Interviews 👩🏽💼📹🗣
As someone who practiced many times throughout the semester with the help of CMU's CPDC, I can attest to practice increasing your confidence both in the interview room and out. I like to think of it as the process of getting to know yourself very well. For anyone else who struggles with interviewing like I do, I recommend filming yourself answering questions if you don't have a partner to practice with. You end up capturing a lot of your habits!
And last but not least,
4) Practicing my Japanese 🗾
Many of those who are close to me may know that I've actually taken 3 semesters worth of Japanese here at CMU. Having not put much use of the language, I've grown rusty. Looking ahead to my trip abroad next year, I am hoping to ease into studying daily and regaining my proficiency.
I hope that by summer's end I am an improved version of myself, have an internship in hand, and ready to brave into the start of my penultimate year.
