Next up were the end users! End users from the supermarket 🛒, food production and food transportation 🚛 industries shared their experiences working with natural refrigerants with the audience in Prague. ➡️ Olaf Schulze, Director of Energy Management/Real Estate Sustainability at METRO PROPERTIES, gave an update on the food wholesaler’s ambitious “F Gas Exit Program.” “Moldova is the first country where METRO operates with all natural refrigerants, CO2,” said Schulze. “Slovakia will be our second country to be all-natural followed by France where we have more than 90 stores.” ➡️ Jan Geeraerts, Head Of Engineering Department at Carrefour Belgium, spoke about Carrefour’s CO2 strategy and energy innovations. “Today, 77% of our stores use CO2 and 30% of our franchise stores use CO2,” said Geeraerts. “We installed all doors on our CO2 cabinets starting in 2022, which had a payback period of just eight months and no impact on sales. We also integrated AI to set algorithms to save energy. ➡️ ”Nestlé uses heat pumps throughout its food production process, including using ammonia heat pumps that can produce hot water at 90°C. Vincent Grass, Global Refrigeration Leader Corporate Operations – Engineering Services, told the audience during the end user panel that the company is planning to go to even higher temperatures. “We’ve begun collaborating with Copeland/Vilter AG to achieve a 120°C ammonia condensing temperature,” said Grass. ➡️ Bierbichler is one of the earliest adopters of natural refrigerant-based transport refrigeration technology, and Managing Director Michael R. gave an update on the company’s trial of Ecooltec’s CO2/propylene TRUs. “We were first movers by rolling out natural refrigerants in our trucks,” said Reiserer. “The decision was a pretty simple one, not driven by governance or technical data. It was just, ‘Is there any innovation around in this market?” #GoNatRefs #ATMOEurope #NaturalRefrigerants Jan Dusek
