Over the Summer the collaborative White Paper 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧: 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐔 was published under the stewardship of Marija Bartl and Rutger Claassen. Over 20 authors discuss aspects of a new EU industrial policy premised on company ownership that facilitates sustainability transitions. Toon Meelen and I were honored to contribute to this White Paper, in which we discuss the role of government ownership in driving EU sustainability transitions 🇪🇺 🔦 We shed light on the potential of government-owned enterprises for sustainability outcomes, highlighting their potential to reduce emissions, increase sustainable waste management, and drive investment in ‘green’ technology and infrastructure. 🎤 We discuss the influence of political ties, corruption control, and corporate governance on sustainability performance by government owned firms. 🔎 We find that, depending on the context, government ownership is promising for addressing sustainability problems. Challenges such as efficient management and cross-border spill-overs, however, should also be addressed.

To promote environmental sustainability within our global supply chain, embracing a comprehensive and collaborative approach is imperative. Vital strategies encompass implementing robust monitoring systems to oversee environmental impacts, yielding valuable insights for enhancement. Our objective is to curtail the presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment by investing in advanced wastewater treatment solutions and fortifying waste management procedures. The prioritization of phasing out palm oil underscores our commitment to seeking sustainable alternatives while actively involving our suppliers in this transition. Furthermore, we meticulously assess our logistics and transportation methods to mitigate carbon emissions, exploring the integration of electric vehicles and optimizing shipping routes. An open dialogue with our suppliers is pivotal, as collaborative efforts cultivate a shared dedication to sustainability. By establishing ambitious objectives, such as attaining net-zero emissions by 2050 and promoting training and awareness among our teams and supply chain partners, we endeavour to instil a culture of environmental stewardship that drives meaningful change and fosters a more sustainable future. Our unwavering commitment to these strategies and objectives underscores our dedication to positively impacting the environment.
How do we advance environmental sustainability in our global supply chain? To drive responsible practices, we need to know what is happening in our supply chain. Carolina Sved, Head of Indirect and Sustainable Procurement, sheds light on some of the key areas we are focusing on. These include: 👉 Minimizing pharmaceuticals in the environment by treating wastewaters carefully and improving waste management 👉 Phasing palm oil out of our products 👉 Evaluating the modes of transport used in logistics. Above all, we are in close discussion with our suppliers to find ways to minimize our environmental impacts together. We believe that the most positive impact arises through dialogue. Learn how we aim for net zero emissions across our value chain by 2050 from the article linked in the comment section ⬇

Here are the key highlights shared by Dr. Goetz Martin, our Director of Sustainability & Strategic Projects during the plenary session on “Beyond “Avoidance”: Industrial decarbonisation and the journey to emissions reductions” at the recent Commodity Trading Week APAC conference: 🌎 Measuring Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and product carbon footprints is now a standard practice across industries. However, traders are facing challenges with Scope 3 (indirect) emissions due to partially mapped supply chains, while facing increasing demands for detailed data from both regulators and consumers. 💼 Recognising the complex nature of emission reduction, industries are turning to partnerships as a key part of their strategy. These collaborations range from technical support to joint implementation, helping to share the responsibility and enhance the effectiveness of emission reduction efforts. From achieving 98 percent Traceability to the Plantation (TTP) for our palm supply chain to supporting our suppliers on their sustainability journey, GAR remains steadfast in our ongoing commitment to producing sustainable palm oil.
