News round-up: this week in governance from Board Agenda® notes that Ian Peters MBE has now stepped down from the Institute of Business Ethics, with Lauren Branston ‘taking the helm’. After her first full week in post as CEO, Lauren is optimistic for the IBE’s future: ‘I am inspired by the legacy of promoting ethical standards in business that the IBE has built over nearly 40 years. Ethics in business is not just about compliance and regulation, it is also about building trust, culture, sustainability and value creation. In a rapidly changing world, the role of ethics has never been more critical or more complex.’ #businessethics #newCEO

“I think the issue is part of a broader theme of erosion of trust in large institutions, and we’re seeing it in our company with a low-trust environment across the board. We’ve really focused on rebuilding trust and using culture to engender trust. Trust has become a currency.” Tapestry Networks’ Ethics, Culture and Compliance Network kicked off 2024 with a conversation on cultivating and maintaining cultures of trust and transparency in the face of challenging financial, operational, and leadership conditions. Implementation and governance of AI technologies continues to be an area of exploratory growth, emerging risk and opportunity. Board directors and ethics and compliance leaders shared learnings and priorities for 2024 as they continue to advance oversight of corporate ethics, compliance, and culture as enduring drivers of business performance. In her new book Higher Ground, Alison Taylor tackles some of the most challenging questions faced by business in an increasingly turbulent political and social environment. In striking contrast to most similar efforts, she avoids both cheerleading platitudes and hymns as well as conspiratorial condemnation of the corporations she surveys. While there are myriad stories told with clarity and wit, including many in which she had personal experience, her advice can be distilled down to a simple action plan: 1) Corporations should prioritize a small number of cases in which their business has large impact on society (i.e., externalities). 2) They should build trusting relationships with external and internal stakeholders to learn how positive impacts can be enhanced and negative impacts curtailed. 3) They should seek to implement such adaptation through collective action at the system-level. She works through the how with modesty and insight in the difficult cases of corruption, human rights, and corporate political activity. She critically exposes the shallowness of the safe strategies of transparency, rooting out bad apples, choosing good leaders and zero tolerance. Instead, she advocates repeatedly for systems-level thinking that acknowledges the role of CEOs and employees, communities and politicians, consumers and suppliers in building “moral muscle”that can strengthen individuals, organizations and the systems in which they interact. In such systems the data from materiality maps and financial models informs human reflection and critical thinking before organizations move slowly, cooperatively and with integrity to ensure that harmony among these elements and with their stakeholders is developed and maintained. Doing so enables them to ascend to higher ground both in competition with their peers and in contribution to society. Corporate Diplomats, geostrategists, ESG integrators should all read Higher Ground, now available for purchase. https://lnkd.in/gGXi6SS9 #politicalrisk #ESG #stakeholderengagement #stakeholderstrategy #ethics #systemsthinking #systemschange
